Default Baked Desert Floor Basing

I've decided that I'm going to complete the bases of my models with a baked desert floor look--like the image below. I've had some thoughts on using Crackle medium (and have no idea how that will work) although I've had suggestions to use maybe some kind of sculpting putty. I believe the second would be a whole lot more work than is really needed. Thoughts, ideas, or suggestions welcomed

Yeah, it didn't quite load as it should have. I'll try a different image of what I'm trying to convey here.

Scroll down to the 4th example. Seems pretty easy, and all it took was green stuff.

Mud cracks. Not too hard. Most putties are designed not to do this, so you are probably better off making the grooves yourself.

You could probably simulate it well enough with some plaster or (even better) some actual concrete, which would negate the need for weights in the base(s).

Easiest way to do this is to brush a coat of Elmer's glue on the base and wait a few minutes before brushing a coat of paint over it (while the glue is still tacky). This will cause a "crackle" finish and should make decent mud cracks.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm worried though that basing nearly 100 models with green stuff is going to get expensive. The Elmer's glue should do well enough- I'll have to get a bad brush for that. Has anyone had any experience with Crackle medium? it seems it might be the quickest way (and we are talking nearly a hundred models here) and with good results. Although I do like the idea of getting a 3d effect with the green stuff.

Crackle Medium = Elmer's Glue. It's a little trick that professional painters use rather than spending $9 / pint on crackle medium. Trust me, if you take the time to get used to how long you need to let the glue set beforehand, you can get the exact same finishes. Oh, and I've found that Elmer's Wood Glue seems to work a little better.

Best of luck.

Oh, ok--I'll try that. I'm on a budget anyway.
