Default Commander Individuality

I'm having trouble painting my commander, I dont know how to differentiate him from the rest of the suits. I mean Theres always the painting a shoulder pad, or the helmet different, but I'm wondering if there's another way to make him stand out. The current colors im using are spacewolf grey, silver, and black, black being the predominant color, with silver on the mechanics(legs, elbow), and spacewolf on select armor plates. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You could use the colors of the sept on certain panels or paint those cool marking

Heres what I do. Personally I would like to have my entire army to look like my commander, but I just don't have the time! I paint the rest of the army decently, but swiftly. Such as troops, get basic painting. 2-3 layers of color, no highlights, just keep it simple.

When it comes to more specialized units such as tanks or elites, then I step it up. 3-4 layers of paint, highlights, the works. I spent a more time on them and they look better. I do this to show I still care about my army by not having it entirely half hacked.

Then comes the really special things, such as commanders or the sarge of a bodyguard. I spend HOURS on them.Tons of time, mostly spread out whenever I feel like it. The only time I never use a fine detail brush on these is then I use the primer. So much time allows you to get that great amount of detail, and that unique look.

Now here, Is what I believe, to be the most important part of a special model. The conversion. Heres what I do. Look around on the web, play a video game, or just brainstorm a good idea, then base your conversion off of it. Now keep in mind, don't copy others. The lack of originality has really been hitting me lately. And besides, its your army, not some other guy on the web, or some programmer.

Think about it, would you rather have a model like this...

Or like one of these two...

None of these pics are mine, they are from Coolminiornot, and Gamesworkshop.

Keep in mind these are only ideas. Just grab what ever you want to do and stick with it. Also if you get frustrated or stuck in the early stages, don't stop, keep on going. The models always look bad until they are completed.

Guessing from your avatar, I would say you play tau, However if you play another army, it would be EXTREMELY helpful to know.

Hopefully that helped. For now, Goodnight, and I will check back In tomorrow afternoon.

I gave my Commander a scratch-built head, and a custom-made base (he is sitting atop an old plastic ruin for 40K). Looks just great, and everyone immediately recognises him as someone important

My crisis suit commander

Easy enough to see why he stands out.

Yeah, you just need some effort and he will stand out very well. No need FW stuff to do that. unless you really are heavy on the money or have so much craziness like I do.

I would recommend the forgeworld suits, to help with a commander.

They are not that much more than the standard commander, and are fully poseable with minimal cutting, and can really stand out.
