I purchased a few older White Dwarfs last weekend (316 and 319) and was shocked to see that several models in featured armies did not have the standard base size. For instance, Firewarriors and Pathfinders on 40mm bases and Crisis Suits on 60mm bases. Is this something I simply haven't noticed from being under my rock? 'Cause I thought you had to have the standard bases. Thanks.

The rules are basically you may have a larger base than the original but not a smaller base. There is only really once downside to putting a model on a larger than normal base , it means that more enemy models can get into combat with you.
Thats what I seem to remember them being correct me if I'm wrong. Rapouc

The advantages and disadvantages are pretty obvious from that.

Yeah -
Though I don't have exact sizes for the most part you can either base a model on the base supplied or anything larger. By making bases larger you can shoot further (depending on how you play) - and thus be hit from further away - but you do increase the number of models that can engage you in combat. A bigger base also offers more modelling opportunity (a bigger area to work with means you can use things such as slate, without making the base look overcrowded, and you can include larger areas of flock/sand/water/static grass etc. That help at all?

remember to be resonable, if you intend to block line of sight and enemy movement with say, a drop pod(for example), and put it on a 10 inch base, not only are you "power gaming", you would also be a "jerk". there is no defined limit on how big though.

I tend to base my centrepiece and elite models on larger bases, but usually only one 'size' larger (25-40mm, 40-60mm etc)
No one has yet complained about it, and does give extra space for modelling victims/landscapes etc.
