Do your homework first. Look at the pictures on GW's store and see if any particular nation's style screams "buy me" to you. If you're more interested in how they play than how they look, look them up on wikipedia. It's a good source of general information about the various armies.

Yeah - vassal might be a good place to find the army that suits your style.

Although to be perfectly honest, orks would always be my first suggestion for an army - whether you are new or a veteran. Why? Loads of orks to throw at an objective, bags of conversion potential, and most importantly - they are serious fun to play - very little else comes close as far as i am concerned.

Funny that exact description fits guard perfectallay (In my opinion) But adding to that Ig have many diffrent regiments.
Tallaran, cadian, catchean, vostorian, steel leigon, pratorian, vallhallen, and (if you have a big walllet) ,death korps, and elyssians.

If in doubt, go Space Marines - you don't need many models to get a legal Space Marine army, they have a lot of variation, and they are very forgiving if you screw up. A lot of the more "elite" armies will not forgive even the slightest mistake.

Guard forgive mistakes "whoops i lost 50 guys oh well only 325 points'' compared to the 1300 or so space marines would be.

No, they really don't. If you don't use cover properly, you'll be blown to pieces by an embarrassingly small amount of enemy fire. If you don't deploy right, and lay down proper suppressive and supporting fire, you'll be assaulted and torn to pieces.

Guard do not forgive mistakes.
