Default Answer a question please.

Here I am at work (not doing any may I add) when i start thinking about 40k once more.

Am i right in thinking the entry in space marine codex about smoke causes all hits from the shooting phase to be glancing? (or obscurred now)

So does this mean that a crystal targetting matrix can get round that as it shoots in the movement phase.... its what the wording implies even though it is a bit on the evil/beardy side of things.

Co-incidentally i'd never actually use this if it does in fact work, however i do know people that would.

Even though the CTM allows Eldar vehicles to shoot in the Movement Phase it still classes as shooting, thus the smoke still obscures the target. The smoke doesn't lift then suddenly appear again in between movement phases!

Sorry i don't have my codex to hand but I'm sure it says that it obscures target in shooting phase. The ctm is a shooting attack in the movement phase.

Not that it matters that much.. its just another rules pothole :

God i must be bored to be thinking like this as its never actually going to occur in a game lol.

The smoke launcher lasts until your next turn, I beleive, so it would still be in effect.

That's wrong.

The smoke launcher works as described. Have fun trying to get people to let it work.

Stage 1.
Smoke launchers are popped at the end of your movement phase.

Stage 2.
Smoke dissapears after the enemys next shooting phase.

Stage 3.
Shooting with crystal targetting matrices occurs in the movement phase, which is before the shooting phase.

Conclusion:
The smoke is in place during the enemy movement phase and affects the CTM shooting as normal;
or the smoke dissapears to allow any eldar vehicles equipped with CTM nearby to take a shot before re-appearing to affect any other guns the eldar army may have. It's one of those strange balances, like wasps laying their eggs in spiders three times their size without getting eaten.

From the space marine codex:

"Once per game, after completing its move, a vehicle with smoke launchers can trigger them. The vehicle may not fire in the turn that they use smoke launchers, but any penetrating hits scored in the opponents next Shooting phase counts as glancing"

Reading this, then yes u are not protected in the enemy's movement phase. So you suffer any penetrating hits scorred.

See it as this:

your turn> fire smoke launchers
enemy movements phase> smoke builds up around vehicle
enemy shooting phase> a thick blanket of smoke protecting the vehicle from penetrating hits.

Looks like we have another unintended glitch in the rules

Undoubtedly.

Although I don't think it's a case of lighting a fire and waiting for the smoke to build up.

If Eldar get this bonus, then it is unintended. I will contact a few GW reps with this question, we shall see.

Similarly, would CTM's enable you to shoot at a Slanesh Siren Deamon Prince. Since the siren psychic power is used in "enemy shooting or assault phase" ?

Although I think this is probably just a loophole, I would most likely give the Eldar player the benefit of the doubt.* The thing is, you can't use logic to deal with "phases".* In reality, both player's movement, shooting, and assault phases would all be happening simultaneously.* Phases are just a construct we use to simplify the game mechanics down to a reasonable level.* The fact that the Crystal Targeting Matrix allows you to fire in the movement phase does not really represent the weapon firing at an earlier point in time than it would normally.* It just represents the fact that Eldar have wacky targeting capabilities that allow them to fire very quickly and accurately on the move at targets of opportunity.* There is no way to determine whether or not smoke would hinder this, so I would just use the literal interpretation until someone provides an "official" response.
