Default Vertical Skimming?

I've heard it different ways from different sources, and I'm wondering if there are any official rules governing the vertical movement of a skimmer, and failing that what house rules players tend to go by.

The problem with unregulated skimmer movement was brought to my attention during a Tau vs Eldar Cityfight-terrain tank battle. The problem of many buildings was easily circumvented by his ingenious solution - flying his multitracking Hammerhead 12" straight up.

I'm not asking people to breach copywrite, just can someone point out if there is a rule governing this form of quasi-loophole. Till then I intend to play by the following: A skimmer can move upwards, measuring distance diagonally to maximum angle of 45 degrees (60 for fast skimmers) and fire from it's elevated position with appropriate modifiers to LOS, but cannot exceed an altitude of 12" and must move downwards to normal height before moving horizontally next movement phase.

Despite being played in a 3D environment, 40K uses 2D rules. Thus you do not measure up or down, unless rules specifically state otherwise.

As for vertical movement; a Skimmer automatically climbs/dives to match the terrain. You may choose to "pop up" to see over a terrain feature without moving over it, but that means anyone you can see can see you back...

Its so cool and funny, a tank leaps over a 20 story building and onto the street on the other side.

Ahh, thanks for filling me in on that... I'll try the house rule above with my playgroup for a game or two, but knowing the actuall rules makes things easier.

So we don't have a reference for the actual rules?

Um.. Well this might be it - Battle for macragge rulebook, page 61 - Vehicle Movement > Skimmers

As wargamer said though, there aren't rules for vertical movement - they're meant to skim/hover above the ground.. not bunny-hop their way around..

I think I might know what he means but not sure. Explanations would be most welcome.
