Default Origin of the term 'beardy'?

I think I know what it means - playing a bit dodgy/cheap, but where does the term beardy come from? Is it British English slang? Gamer slang? Does it actually have anything to do with facial hair?

In ancient games of chess, players with a great length of hair under their chin would tie it into a lassoo. Then, while their opponent was silent, deep in thought, they would yell out loudly. With the other player distracted, they could use their beards to pull pieces into places favouring them rather than their opponent.

Later the use of beards was in medieval times, when knights, in duels, would grow massive beards and tie them around their armour, strengthening it to the point where a sword would bounce straight away from it even after a direct hit.

In more recent years, beards have been used many times in ball sports to absorb the ball which in most games prevents the opposition from scoring. This most unsportsman-like "tactic" is not yet outlawed in sports, though it is extremely unfair.

Actually, I don't know.

Beardy comes from Warhammer Dwarfs. Players would take nothing but crossbows, handguns and war machines, then sit in their deployment zone and shoot for the entire game. It was legal, and effective, but clearly unsporting.

Gotcha, thought maybe it had something to do with dwarfs, although I do like some of the other explanations provided here. Thanks for the swift reply.

When GWs games first came out, the wargaming market was cornered by oldish historical wargamers. these turned to rogue trader et al as well. these guys would be the typical older gamers, with beards, and all that crap.

So, along come the new people to the hobby, and these guys think they're god's annointed. So when they play, they play purely to win. They twist the rules, bend, break the rules, play unsportingly etc, all to win.

THese gamers came to be known as "longbeards", because (a) they tended to have beards and (b) a dwarf longbeard is a veteran, and these guys were "veterasn" of wargaming. And so, their style of unfair play became known as "beardy gaming".

At least, thats what i was told...

None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."
