Default WH40K Best buys.

Let's say we were doing a "Consumer Reports" article on the armies of 40K, and we wanted to select Best Buys in each category for any army. Think in terms of benefits/points cost, versatility, or even how much $$ the physical model costs or its looks. What would you recommend? Here's what I have:

Yriel's "Best Buys"

HQ:

1. Ork HQ- Go ahead, laugh about BS2 all you want. We're talking about a boss you can get a S10 PClaw, 3+ Save, 5+ Invul all within ~120pt range. Don't forget those NOBZ, at 2W, with Meks, Doks, and Grots to keep it alive for CC. Throw it in a trukk and drop off this meatgrinder in the middle of the field for MUCH FUN.

2. Blood Angel Chaplain- Okay, so you HAVE to buy him, but he gets FREE bodyguard, with FREE feel no pain, and FREE jumpacks. He already has a power weapon and rosarius...so no need to worry about what options. This guy and his Death Company can be nearly imbalancing in low point games.

3. Necron Destroyer Lord- more of an honorable mention here, but you get some decent mobility and get him a res orb, and he makes his forces on the field that much better. I just...don't like the model. Yeck.

Elites:

1. Wolf Guard- Options for days and days. Throw em in together. Put one in with your wolf scouts for that backfield menace. Honorable mention for their other Elite/HQ, the Venerable Dreadnought.

2. Lictors- I like Lictors. They frustrate. They annoy. They can cause enough for a distraction for an entire army of CC death to advance under. Fairly cheap points cost, too! But ugly...yeck....

3. Eldar Striking Scorpions- At a mere 1 point more than a standard Space Marine, Scorpions can do an awful lot more. Good armor with decent STR, a freebie CC attack, good Ld and I. Don't forget options: Exarch with Scorpion's Claw, Infiltrate...haywire grenades...these guys aren't just another close combat unit, they are tactically flexible and a MUST HAVE in pretty much any Eldar list. Paint your tanks green and white, and these guys are now TROOPS.

Troops:

1. Chaos Space Marines- Arguably the most flexible individual troops choice in the game. Why most Chaos players go so minimal on cheap death dealing is beyond me (oh wait...they give in to the ruinous Beard powers...).

2. Necron Warrior- Space Marine Stats (except I, but better Ld) and a weapon that can wound/glance ANYTHING. WBB Rolls.zzzzzzzzzzz....

3. Tau Fire Warrior- Str 5, 30" range. Cheap as chips. 'Nuff said.

Best Unit Leaders

1. Eldar Exarchs- Pick ANY of em. My 2 fave are the Striking Scorpion, and the Swooping Hawk menace. In most cases, the Exarch does mroe damage than his squad, and sometimes you buy the squad just for the Exarch (because Shining Spears are an "Yriel's Worst Buy")

2. Chaos Aspiring Champion- Options. I tend to like them with a PFist in the middle of a horde of mutants...it's like having a PFist with 20 wounds. For funsises let him get possessed.

3. Ork Nob- See #2, but add a wound on him, or throw him on an Ork Warbike for more Dakka!!

Best Tank (Under 250)

1. Eldar Falcon- Easily the most versatile tank in the game. Skimmer, Tank, Fast. These are all good things. It's a transport AND still a scoring unit, as well as being a headache to down when properly modified.

2. Leman Russ (Standard)- Armor 14 front. ORDNANCE. The end. The pillbox no Imperial Commander should do without. Oh wait, it's 4th Ed....wait....still a pillbox.

3. Sisters of Battle Excorcist- Armor 13 Front. BS4. Did I mention D6 Krak Missle shots? This tank bascially legitimized the SOB's as a real army.

Monstrous Creature

1. Bloodthirster- Murderous in combat, and has the ability many other monsters lack to GET THERE. Good armor save and Godlike statline, and maybe not cheap, but well played CAN win an entire battle.

2. Eldar Wraithlord- Shoot at it...T8, 3W, 3+ Save. Stay at range and this thing is firing back with the likes of Scatter Lasers, Brightlance, or Starcannon. Get in close and your facing S10 at I4. Ow. And that's after sucking down 2 flamers. A WL with a Shuricannon is a MEASLY 100 points. 100 points!!!!

3. Winged Hive Tyrant- Like the Bloodthirster, not cheap, but here's another gamebreaker for you. He can sport some decent ranged weapons too, like the Wraithlord. Just be sure you know what you want out of him...people waste points on options they'll never use.

Dedicated Transport

1. Dark Eldar Raider- Am I smoking crack?? A flimsy open-topped skimmer? Well, if you're smart enough to keep it out of harms way, it's giving your Dark Eldar that almighty 18"+ charge that the army desperately needs. And it's DEAD FAST. And it's CHEAP.

2. Ork Trukk- Similar reasons, but add some points for those Trukk Boyz that are only affected on a 6 when it pops. The feeling you get when your 5 point Rokkit Launcha hail Mary shot takes down a 150pt Predator....priceless.

3. Rhino- 50 points for moving terrain. I like it. People march everything from close combat specialists to Furioso dreadnoughts behind thiese things, and who cares if it pops? Okay, so it barely made #3, but hell, I want to take Rhinos on my other army lists just to be sure I have something to deploy out of sight with!

Fast Attack

1. Ork Warbikes- Twin Linked Big Shootas means you're firing with an effective BS of 3, at S5, T5, and a 5+ invul save. Give your poorly armored Trukks some decent cover. Hell, on a Kult of Speed list you can infiltrate these bad boys, and give them 2W each!

2. Space Marine Attack Bike- Why don't we see more of these on the field? Did someone get a different codex than me? It's got good T, good save, Turbo Boosters, and is more survivable than its more common Land Speeder cousin. All weapon options are good on this thing. Where is the love for White Scars that everyone predicted?

3. Sisters of Battle Seraphim- Seriously Yriel, it's bad enuff you have 1 SOB entry in Best Buys, but this? Girls with jumpacks? Girls taking faith tests on 3d6. Girls with twin linked weaponry, hit and run, and unmatched versatility in the jump-troop genre. Properly used, these nuns can wreak backfield havoc on tanks, and draw your expensive assault troops into remote areas of the battlefield, negating their power weapons with faith just long enough to leave you in no-man's land. Their best feature? The fact that hardly anyone knows what they can really do.

These are some of my "Best Buys". What are yours? What about Worst Buys?

Wraithguard. They soak up fire and then dish it back out!

Striking scorpions highb initaitive stikes with a 3+ save is invaluable in the feild o battle.

Space wolf blood claws getting the charge will have alot of attacks (4 a peice) and the ability to have a squad of 15 with three power fists. for 240 points you get 15 claws three with power fists. 48 S4 hits and 12 power fists the unit they attack will be hurtin! >

I accually think the wave sephent is better than the falcon. transport 10 guys or 5 wraithguard and a warlock
has a choice of a few twin linked gun. Has the frontal sheilding thingy.(people should know what this is)

Great compilation, Yriel, but I just have to take issue with one of your statements:

You dismiss the Death Company as being "imbalancing in low-point games", where infact many gamers will rant to no end to the effect that the DC is the single beardiest unit in 40k.

Eh, the IP policy isn't that bad. It's the fact that they jump down people's necks for violations. I guess it's mostly because of the stupid and outdated codex system.

Best buys? All I know is, don't put the crisis suit in there. ;D

The hammerhead armed with a railgun has to be in the top 3 mbt list.

For 150 points (railgun, burst cannons and a multi-tracker) you get a tank that can shoot up any tank with impunity and unless you have 2+ armour any squad will be fish food (submunition round).

As an elite choice i have to include stealth suits in my list. Due to the difficulty in actually shooting them they often get ignored and they are so amazingly cheap in points for their tactical worth.

There is also a lot to be said for a 10man marine unit with a missile launcher and plasma gun. They can deal with anything in any phase and at 170pts is an absolute bargain.

You might guess that i chose squads in any army due to tactical worth vs points cost, in any army not just tau.

Actually, Scorpions are 2 points CHEAPER than marines, they're only 13 points each

And I reckon at 80 points, the Avatar is a very good buy. As in VERY good buy.

Shining Spears is the worst buy I can possibly think of. There's no one reason I can come up with that justifies them costing so much more than everything else.

Jetbikes with Shuriken cannons are also quite stupid, cos a Vyper costs exactly the same.

I think you misread my comment. What I'm saying is, in low point games, the presence of a Death Company is arguably an unfair balance in favor of the Blood Angel's player. It's pretty simple math.

Even if you did ignore the "feel no pain" special rules...the fact of the matter is you are getting several jumpacks and possibly powerfists for FREE. In a 500 point battle vs. a standard marine list, you're coming out 60-200 points cheaper. So it's like playing a 500 point Eldar list vs a 630pt Blood Angel list...or on average ~20% more points. That's why most consider this unit 'beardy' (myself included here).

Thanks for the comments folks! I agree with most of them, especially the Tau Hammerhead comment. Properly equipped, it's top three, and would displace the SOB Excorcist. And I am a HUGE fan of Stealth Suits.

Before 4th Ed I would agree with the comment about the Wave Serpent being a better buy than a Falcon. But with the rules for scoring units, and the inability to screen skimmers with skimmers, there's no tank that can deal out as many moving shots in one turn as the falcon, and still achieve victory conditions.
