Default ranking armies by difficulty of play

since probably nobody here has played all armies, let alone played them enough to be any kind of expert, this will be based on our own experiences, our observations, "what we've heard", all sorts of subjective criteria.

That being said, please rank the armies of 40k from "hardest to win with" to "my 2 year old brother could win with that army"

Here's mine (no splinters, like catachans or dark angels, just the primary armies listed by GW):

Dark Eldar
Tau
Eldar
Daemonhunters
Witch Hunters
Orks
Imperial Guard
Tyranids
Necrons
Space Marines
Chaos Space Marines

Notice that all three T4 3+ armor save armies are on the "easy" end in my list. Nuns with guns are towards the other end due to their T3 and lack of long ranged weapons, especially in the anti-tank area. Daemonhunters, I find even harder, due to their high points cost/low model count. Sure, you can compensate by taking inducted guard, but then you've got IG at its worst (no tanks!) mixed with overpriced marines. No, thanks! Orks and IG are my baseline armies. Nids move from harder than Orks to easier than IG on the strength of their new codex. Both elf armies require a lot of skill to be successful with, the dark ones due to their emphasis on speed over strength, and the not so dark ones because you need a finely tuned balance of specialists to have a chance, and then they have to be applied at just the right time/place. Too many ifs! Tau have similar issues to the elves. Best basic trooper in the game, and an excellent tank, but everything else in their army has a high points cost and is very fragile.

I don't have enough experience or knowledge to do a whole list, but IMO the orks should be a bit higher on the list.
And....that's about all I got.

Aren't I helpful!

An aweful lot depends on how you rate diffuculty etc.

For instance, Marines are one of the easiest army to use but possibly the hardest in the entire game to master.

Orks are also quite easy to play I would say but hard to do really well with.

Eldar are hard to play but once you've mastered them are easy to just totally walk over many opponents with.

I have played with the majority of those armies for at least a year each but currently have only 5 of them.

Tau should definitely be lower down on the list IMO. They can simply follow a stand and shoot policy against many armies although they have to be careful and use careful strategy against power armour armies such as marines.

However as Veq said, even though some armies are easier to use than others it mostly in the end comes down to the skill of the player unless you're playing a simple 'kill other army mission' which I never recommend you play because it's boring.

However my list would be:

Dark Eldar
Orks
Eldar
Imperial Guard
Necrons
Tau
Tyranids
Space Marines
Chaos Space marines

I really dislike Space marines and chaos space marines. The former I think just has too many special rules and upgrades and many players just rely on super powerful upgraded armies to win rather than on tactics which is really annoying. Chaos are almost just as bad but I really dislike the horribly powerful special daemon creatures, such as daemon princes and bloodthirsters - those guys can just rip their way through your entire army once they reach assault range.... :'(

I haven't included daemonhunters and witchhunters because I've had absolutely no experience with them whatsoever.

My opinion:

Dark Eldar
Orks
Eldar
Imperial Guard
Tau
Tyranids
Witch Hunters
Space Marines
Daemonhunters
Necrons
Chaos Space Marines

Orks are insanely hard to play tactically with, and die far too quickly to massed fire.

Tau can be hard to use, though it's mostly just working out how to guess ranges effectively.

Imperial Guard are tougher because they die really quickly and fare badly in assaults (worse the Tau, in my opinion - especially against Marines. The lower Ws and I does nothing to the dice rolls, and they have improved armour).

Tyranids are mid-way, since they are either stupidly easy (massed monsterous creatures) or challenging (a balanced mix).

Daemonhunters aren't difficult - they are basically marines they dish out more damage. Ignore lack of numbers, they can take Imperial Guard allies and thus have the best of both worlds.

Necrons are a 'walk towards the enemy and win' army, since they are so hard to put down - their only challenge being avoiding pie plates (something easily avoided with Monoliths and Heavy Destroyers), though even then they'll come back because of the thrice damned Resurrection Orb.

Dark Eldar
Daemonhunters
Tau
Eldar
Tyranids
Orks
Witch Hunters
Imperial Guard
Space Marines
Necrons
Chaos Space Marines

Ok so Ive seen chaos players zoom their bikes at full speed across the board and summon a nausiating amount of daemons right infront of the enemy lines. Necrons are just... well necrons. A few lucky shots early on that take out the opponents heavy weapons and the necron player has it made. SM are ... yea the smurfs of doom. IG are fun but can get mulched with a little luck and aim. IG vs IG battles are awesome to watch, the biggest blood baths Ive seen were IG vs IG. Sisters got to get up close, but they are good at it. Orkies and all der boyz can win with a little tact, but too many players just zoom and go boom. OMG FRIGGIN GIANT BUGS!!! Why does that make me think its Aliens or star ship troopers... hmm. Yea the bugs can put a lot of really big critters on the field, Im not sure I have enough anti armor to take down half of them, Grr. The Eldar are good but its too easy to use them vey cheesy or beardy or whatever you want to say. The last campaign at my local hobby shop had 3 Eldar armies, the only one that did anything was a swordwind with three wraithlords and an avatar... beardy much.

Tau, wes got really big guns... mwahahaha... just dont get too close to us. And btw if your thinking of shooting our robotic suitey thingies be ready for some trouble. Daemonhunters are easy and hard at the same time. Above 1500pts they kick some serious behind but before then they just cannot field enough troops. It is far too easy to just shoot them all. And Dark Eldar, well Ive never heard of one winning, Ive seen less than half a dozen and well... they are just non existent, if a ghost army can win easily it would be a miracle. *shrug*

I've heard that dark eldar could be very cheesy. As a wise man once said,"If you have so many dark lances that they become an effective anti-infantry weapon, there's something wrong."

Dark Eldar Are the hardest because the lack the myriad special rules of the Eldar but are just as fragile.

Tau are right after them because they're so incredibly weak in the assault phase that the instant someone gets in assault with them they become invincible.

Hardest

Dark Eldar
Tau
Orks
Eldar
Necrons
Space Marines
Imperial Guard
Tyranids
Chaos Space Marines

Easiest

Imperial Guard are third because they can bring NINE Lascannons to a 1500 pt battle and still have room for a Leman Russ, a Demolisher, a Basilisk, and almost all their regular troops.

Chaos Space Marines are the easiest because they can do whatever they want with thier HQ and nobody can counter that as easily as Chaos can counter everything else. e.g. my buddy says: "Wait, you have S 10 guns. Oh well, just make my HQ T 6 then."

You might think that Imperial Guard are easy to use because they can bring so many heavy weapons. But remember that if they do that then you have no mobility and no close combat ability. Infact, they don't even have either when you tailor towards it!

Tau on the other hand have both firepower and moblity - at the same time. A smart Tau player can stay out of assault. A smart Imperial Guard player can't.
