Default question about rules

i don't battle very often so i am not that great on the rules, there is one thing that seams a bit strange to me and that is when a squad takes damage the person whos squad it was gets to chose what moddles are killed. I think this seems very unrealistic as they would just take off the weaker units first, but in a real fight it would be random who gets killed. If anything the more powerful guys would be targete first. Is this right or am i reading the rules wrong?

You are correct that the exact model that dies would be fairly random. What the rule is attempting to simulate is that fact that, if the plasma gunner dies, the guy next to him is likely to throw down his lasgun and pick up the plasma gun. Admittedly, it becomes a little strange when the weapon is not something that is easily picked up, like a powerfist, or a heavy wepon that is attached to the model's backpack, but that is the basic idea.

Don't tell me that you fell for the MTV lie?
The MTV lie is that people who rebel against tradition are thnking for themselves, while those who follow tradition are just sheep who do not think.
It is, of course, completely untrue. The decision to follow tradition is just as much an exercize of free will as is the decision to depart from it.

You could also argue that the most experienced warriors would get the specialist kit, and because they are experienced, they are much better at cheating death. Think about it, in a real fight, who dies more; veterans or conscripts?

You can also argue that 40k is not to scale, and that each model is infact a fireteam of several models.

It would also balance the fluff ideals between Guardsmen and Space Marines - if you scale it a single Marine can be just a single Marine, but a single Guardsmen is infact a whole squad of Guardsmen. That makes alot more sense when you play by the rules!

;D fluff moment:

Brother Bolter and Brother LasCannon are two Space Marines in a tense firefight, holding position in a line of ruins.... Brother Lascannon gets a Pulse Rifle sized hole through his chest, and falls to the ground. Brother Bolter looks at his fallen comrade, then his comrades Lascannon.... looks at his own Bolter... looks back at the Lascannon.... Then at his bolter..... oddly enough a Lascannon bolt resumes its deadly shots out of the ruins...

;D

Right, but when a space marine would rapid fire and kill two guard you are pretty much saying one space marine is killing 20 guardsmen. That doesent seem to realistic.

Gaah... 40K isn't based off fluff, fluff is based off 40K. In the fluff, SMurfs are incredably beefed and ssuperpowerful. However, in the game they FALL LIKE WHEAT BEFORE THE SCYTHES OF CHAOS! YAGAGAGAGAGAGAG!
'K, Moment 'O Insanity over.
Also, the original rule was that the OPPONENT got to pick who died, but thi lead to Commander and heavy-weapon sniping, which is just a tad bit un-fun. So they changed it to make it a teensy bit cooler. Or maybe the origional way was better, and we're all crazy! Who knows?

- Anytime, Magnus the Red

YOU take a rapid fire grenade launcher to a couple of squads of WWI/II style regiments and tell me how many men you kill...
