Default Starting out 40k, planned Tau, what to do

Hi everyone! I am starting out 40k, and I want to make a Tau army, I read your Hints to Starting a Tau Army guide and it was pretty nice I think. I'll look for a battleforce and codex (some are availible on eBay, there's The War Store, so I am in good shape).
I don't want kroot so I'll sell those on eBay or something.

But other than that, I am quite lost. I need the rulebook, but there is no way I am dishing out $50 for that big black book. I am thinking of the battle for macragge set, will that have everything I need? But then I have extra space marines and tyranids...any idea what to do with those? I also need some painting help and guide. Maybe "How to Paint Citadel minatures" and the $25 games workshop paint set (has 1 brush, 9 paint pots, and I'll buy the black spray paint, and shining gold/mithril silver). Anything else I need? How much do you think it'll cost? Also, by selling tyrands and space marines on eBay, how much might I get?

I would buy the rulebook instead of the starter set. If you do not need the minis, that will do. Maybe get a friend with one for the beginning. The rulebook includes painting tutorials and hints on starting an army. For painting: I would think about a main schemata and buy the colors I need. For grounding, I made the experience, that taking normal color and brush instead of sprays let you make a better job. Spraying might be a faster way, but you'll never cover all parts with color and it might be too thick.
For the starting costs? I'm not used to british or american prices. Maybe theres already a topic for that.

You mean the $50 rulebook? Ouch...and I'll still need other stuff, like dice. But I wouldn't have to get How To Paint Citadel Minatures.

And what is Grounding? I'll need the black spray paint for priming though, then I will paint on top of it, I am thinking of either:
Primary Blue paint scheme with gold secondary and green highlights.
Or Black primary, with secondary gold and blue trim with green highlights.

The second choice would be harder so I will probably choose the first scheme. I think I'll need enchanted blue, a darker blue, maybe Ice blue, Shining gold, and 2 green colors.

I'll still need a little more help. Also, I should state that I am a complete noob at 40k and I don't know a lot about the techniques and stuff, that's why I am coming here for help.

You can find the battle for macragge rulebook for sale on Ebay, it has everything you need though the big rulebook has more information. Stuff like scenarios, pictures, painting tips I guess. I dunno, I just bought the small book.

For a start, welcome to the hobby and welcome to Tau Online.

To play a game you will need:
An afternoon, preferably wet.
The rulebook.
A copy of the relavent Codex.
An army.
A battlefield with terrain.
Dice, rulers and templates.
An opponent.
An opponents army.

Grounding is a way of saying background, practice etc. Or its what happens when you don't get your housework done because you were busy painting. Not really effective in this manner, if you can't go out, you'll just keep painting.

If you have any queries specifically regarding the Tau army, ask in the Tau board. The moderators and members there are used to dealing with that sort of question.

This helps me a lot. The only other thing I need is Paint and glue, and also clippers (which my dad probably has, he is/was an engineer).

Thats what I'm here for.

Above all, have fun. It's your hobby and will cause your share of grief. Make sure there are moments of joy in there too.

If you have friends who have played 40k for a while, one of them should be able to show you the ropes and get you aquainted with the rules in the course of one afternoon - the book is mostly neccesary only if you want to have an exact handle on every last detail, but when casually gaming all you need is a working knowledge.

Just be glad that the rulebook isn't $75 like it is up here, and welcome to TO!
