Default Starter Armies

Hey There Everyone!

I was looking at the Tau Online official armies, and then was suddenly reminded of something going on on Warseer. Starter Armies. The concept is, you have a limited amount of money, you alreday have the codex, but your trying to figure out what to buy to start a good army. I hoping to make this a useful thread for beginners wanting to know what to include in there armies. The post should also include a good army list.

To start, you have 100 pounds. As well as the codex and whatever paint you need, this thread id just for purchasing of the models. Even if you don't live in the UK, just check out the UK online shop for prices on things.

Ok, I'll do a quick one for Tau

100 pounds

Battle Box -50 pounds

Hammer Head -20 pounds

Fire Warriors -18 pounds

2 Blisters of Steath suits -12 pounds

This can give you a fair army list:

HQ:

Shas'o
Plasma Rifle
Missile Pod
2 Gun drones
HW Multi Tracker

Elite:
2x Shas'ui
Plasma Rifle
Missile Pod
Multi-Traker

4 Stealth Suits

Troops

12 Firewarriors
12 Firewarriors
12 Kroot Warriors

Fast Attack:

8 Gun drones

Heavy Support:

Hammerhead
Railgun
SMS

This will come out to around 850 with some upgrades here and there.

Thats is all you need for the army list, just what would be on the models, and the aproxamate point cost.

So, what does everyone else have for there armies?

Lucky

If you are tring to collect on a tight budget, the best option is Ebay. With patience you can find deals at 50-60% off, nothing like being able to buy twice the minis. For example, why buy DE warriors for $30 from GW online when on Ebay you can find two boxes for $24? Collecting more obscure armies and pieces will increase your savings on Ebay, as well as buying second hand from people you know. I have around 800pts of imperial guard that I got 100% free from two friends. Only idiots buy direct from GW, and then they usualy turn around and complain about prices.

Its not as much on a tight budget, just what would be a good start, the money limit was to limit it to a "start", and not a whole army.

buying second hand and on ebay discounts is part of why GW must continue to raise prices. In order to maintain production/profit, either more product is sold or the price goes up. Unless expertly painted, GW figures loose value once painted, so buying new is buying more expensively. I, like many prefer new, since I get everything I need with no missing parts or ugly paint jobs.

I buy partially from GW and partially from ebay. I try to keep it even knowing that the extra $5 I spend per item at the local hobby store is his profit margin. I'm willing to pay that in order to keep him in business. I not willing, however, to pay $15 for a krotox I can get painted on ebay for $5 and $2 shipping.

Just be smart about shopping. that's my advice.

100 pounds! This isn't what I'd call a limited budget!

I realize this, I'm not trying to go with a limited budget, just a good starter army.

Well if money is no object, then you need no starter army. Just buy everything, pay someone in India to paint it, and pick whatever you want to play with that day.

I'm not trying to be mean, I just feel that "starter" means "starter". To me a starter army is saying what is the minimum competitive point value force you can build and play effectively. Say, 500 points should contain what in order to have a good chance of playing well and winning? What brings me from 500 to effective 1000 point games.

Well, how about I reduce it to say... 70 pounds? that gives you the starter box + 20 pounds extra.

Depends if its Canadian or American

Anyways, my Tau army example becomes...

Battle force
hammerhead

same list without stealth suits, and 1 less squad of firewarriors.
