Default Holding objectives

Two questions.

One I think I know the answer to, the other I have no clue.

1) Can a unit under half strength hold an objective?

2) Can a unit in combat, hold an objective, if none of the other unit is within 3"?

For example:
0=Objective
x= Orks
b= banshees

3" xb
0 x x x x xbb
xb

- Will

EDIT: Here Answers the first question. Only question 2 needs answering.

#2: Yes, Will, it can. Nothing specifies that the unit need be unengaged. It's a frequent tactic to purposefully keep your unit a little bit away from an objective, rather than right on top of it, so that when you're assaulted you can remain in 3" but your opponent can't contest.

Of course keep in mind you still need to pile in when you're assaulted, which makes this a bit difficult to pull off.

I piled in so I surrounded him, so no more could be in base contact then spread out the rest, along in a line, still in coherency. This was helped as he had the banshees backing into a wave serpent so I couldn't completely surround him.

Thanks for the answer!

Also about #2 if your enemies are within the right distance of the objective they're contesting it. So you basically don't have claim.

Course if for some reason your units are inside the required claiming distance and their units are outside it, even if they're currently in assault. You are claiming and they are not contesting.

As long as you are following the rules on pg 34 this is OK. But if you can get into Base to base or within 2" of a model in base to base you have to. So if those back 3 or 4 not in Base can get closer then they have to. Also remember that after you fight you pile in and again have to try to get in base or within 2" of someone in base. So having those "trailers" is really difficult to pull off and you have to have alot of luck to do it.

But the answer is yes. If you have followed all the assault rules and piled in properly you can hold or contest an objective while in CC. There is no rule against it.
