Default Army to go with my tau.

Heya,

been thinking about getting a second army, to work along side my tau.

I currently have quite a lot of tau and am very skilled with them (see sig for stats) so am thinking about getting another army.

I want something that will work well with tau, but also be a good enough opponent to use against tau (friends to use).
I don't want orks, they are just not my thing, nor IG as I have lottsa friends with them, but not really sure what to get.

Here's my Battle Report of my most recent battle so you can see roughly how my tau play - generally light on battle suit systems.

I hope you can help, thanks.

When I read the topic title, I would have immediately suggested Orks - I've started playing Orks myself after about nine years of Tau; they complement the Fish'eads rather nicely - with Tau, ranged combat and clever movement is everything, and they have to be wielded like a scalpel. Orks, on the other hand, are the sledgehammer - and there's nothing more satisfying than seeing your Warboss single-handedy stomp through a unit of Marines :funny:

IG would have been my second guess, because you wanted "something to go along with your Tau", but, alas, again thwarted! I shall have my revenge, piratemonkey! You have foiled me for the last time!

Maybe a bit of clarification is needed? When you say "work along side my tau", do you mean A) complement them fluffwise, B) are a nice change of pace, or C) can form an ubar-combination if used together on the battlefield?

Regarding A), the best bet WOULD have been IG; the only other thing I can think of are Witch/Demon Hunters, not played as Inquisition, but as the crew of a Rogue Trader (though you should leave out all the typical =I=-stuff).

Regarding B), something with lots of CC would be nice - so probably every army apart from Tau :shifty:

Regarding C): No can do here; there are better powergamers than me on the boards.

Cheers,
-Bone

PS: Ah, one final thing:

The stats tell nothing. For all we know, you could be pulling them out of your Advanced Stabilisation System, or playing against brain-dead twelve-year olds with only a rudimentary knowledge of the rules. And the Battle report you linked... that game as a rather lost cause for the Marine player from the start (3 units of non-deepstriking, footslogging Terminators and negligible anti-tank firepower? Against TAU?) - so, I am not impressed.
Humility is a virtue, and Bragging on the Internet is for people who suck at life - I'd rant on, but my topmodel-girlfriend is calling me back into bed, and I had a rather long day driving my Ferrari, so, yeah, I'm off

One. lol.
Sweet post dude.

Well, I was thinking mainly to compliment them on a battle field. I am currently very into battling rather than painting so I guess I would prefer that.

And well, I only wrote that because I am proud of it. Some of them were against some pretty tough opponents so I felt pretty pleased with myself.

In a pure battlefield-support question, I'm afraid I cannot help you much - I'm not playing as much as I used to right now, and I'm not entirely up to date on the newest developments. I've faced the enw BAs a couple of times, but every time against the same player, which is not really a great learning experience. But in the end, I suppose some flavour of Power Armour, Traitor-style or (recommended by the house) Loyalist-style.

Though - and that is a stretch - I've once witnessed an Eldar Warlock support my Tau shooting with a few psychic power... I got this strange feeling in my trousers after the Eldar player told me that yes, I can now re-roll my to-wound rolls of my (already Markerlighted) Firewarriors, and that my opponent had to re-roll successful armor saves.
I needed a smoke after that :shifty:

But, yeah, I'd recommend Marines - that's all that's left after you ruling out IG and Orks, anyway (I won't mention Necrons if you don't).

Cheers,
-Bone

Imperial Guard and Orks are really the most fluffiest choice as an "ally" for Tau via Gue'vesa and Free Bootaz respectively. Any other army is a pretty big stretch. I would put Necrons, Tyranids and Chaos as "avoid at all cost". Eldar and Space Marines as well as Inquisition could do it but in fluff, it will be a very brief alliance. Brief like once the enemy is gone, you go straight into shooting each other.

Its a difficult one, as others have said fluff gets in the way of many possibilites.

I've recently switched from tau to tyranids. felt it would be a great contrast by goiong from a shooty army to close combat specialists. i think nids and tau would be a great combination of ranged prowess and CC goodness, but fluff says nids wouldn't ally with anyone as they see everything as prey not to be bargained with, merely absorbed.

I know you've said no to them but i'd say orks would've been a good bet, but hey.

Ever considered a possible alliance of tau and eldar? As said, if orks aren't your thing they could be your best bet.

I guess Elder could work. Never really seen a decent Eldar army played, but I know they are out there. I'll have to have a look at them.

If you mean gameplay-wise rather than fluff-wise, I'd suggest Chaos, Nids or some other army that's good in close-combat. As shooting all the time save for some Kroot and XV8 Pistol-whipping can get a bit...too civil.

Overall I'd say eldar are the best choice. They would do well as an army for friends to use alongside the Tau, and would provide a suitably challenging opponent for them.
Fluffwise who's to say why those pointy-eared xenos do anything. they've been known to ally with just about anyone for their own inscrutable reasons. And it wouldn't necessarily devolve into a post battle bruhaha. Eldar forces are known for their rapid departure as much as their fortuitous arrival.
Before you accuse me of Elfdar bashing, know I have a large elfdar army
among my dust collectors (too many armies. too little time).
