Default Choosing an army for me to collect whilst abroad

As some of you may already know, at the end of January I moved from England to Japan to be closer to my girlfriend. I am now in a full time job with my own apartment and am pretty much sorted with regards to moving out here.

It was always my intention to continue with my Games Workshop hobby whilst I was out here, as demonstrated in this thread. However, some things have changed since I made that thread. Specifically, I became aware of the cost of Games Workshop products out here.

This is a complete list of the Tyranid product range with Japanese prices (¥), their English equivalent converted (¥ -> £, at a rate of ¥130.253 = £1) and how much they cost in England (£).

As you can see there is a significant increase in the cost between the two countries (somewhere between 50% and 120% in every case) and this disturbs me significantly. Especially as I really wanted to make my Tyranid army a swarm army, thus needing to buy more boxes and thus needing to spend even more money.

So I'm in a bit of a rut now. I wanted to do a Tyranid army but I feel exceptionally put out at the thought of having to pay over the odds for it comparatively. I want to consider the possibility of doing another army instead, a more elite army (I.e. smaller model count so as to reduce the overall additional cost levied due to my current country of residence). However, if I did that, I'd want to do an army that I do not currently collect back in the UK, which leaves me with very few options.

Warhammer 40,000

Space Marines
Despite the fact that I do collect Space Marines, two different Chapters in fact, they are the elite of the elite (and the fact that the majority of the range is plastic helps me in that it'll likely be cheaper overall to build an army). The fact that neither of my two collected Chapters are actually glued up to any extent also helps as it's been a very long time since I've assembled any kind of Marines and I kinda want to give it a go. There are a lot of the more recent models (I.e. those released in the past two or three years) that I'd be interested in owning. Down side is, as mentioned, I have an extensive collection of Marines (albeit unassembled) at home.

Black Templars
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the black armour. I already collect three black-clad armies (Raven Guard, Black Legion and Ulthwé Eldar) and I don't really want to go for a fourth.

Blood Angels
Never really been interested in them for as long as I've played the game. The new models are rather nice, though, and I could well see me buying some of them if I did do a different Space Marine army for use in conversions.

Dark Eldar
I have a very small force of these (only 400 points for taking part in a Doubles Tournament) so I don't really consider myself to have a full army of these. I'm really not sure, though, about collecting Dark Eldar, as I'm fully aware of the army book's age and the skill required to use them. I believe myself to have to skill to do so, but having played many substandard armies in the past (usually because of my unfocussed collecting) I'm not too fond of the thought of having to spend a significant amount of effort to have a moderate chance of winning with them.

Necrons
Necrons are an army that I could really sink my teeth into. I loved their portrayal in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Soulstorm and I reckon I would enjoy using them. Their elite status is quite apparent too. My main issues with them are the age and weaknesses apparent in their Codex.

Space Wolves
Once upon a time I wouldn't have touched Space Wolves with a barge pole. Now? I'd love to do an army of them, mainly because of my exposure to Norse mythology over the past 5 years or so.

Warhammer Fantasy

Dark Elves
If I did Fantasy, I would likely do Dark Elves. They're elite and the relatively recent model release included some rather nice models (including plastic Cold One Knights that I really like the look of).

Lizardmen
Again, plastic Cold Ones (though I prefer the Dark Elf ones to these) as well as some really nice other plastic kits (such as the Stegadon). I'm less interested in these than the Dark Elves due to trying to work out a good balance between Skinks and Saurus.

Skaven
Not a chance. Lovely army, but I'm going for small and elite, not large and unwieldy.

The Empire
Likewise. Empire tend to be more of a horde army than an elite army.

Bretonnia
I have a lot of 5th Edition Bretonnians that I never updated to 6th Edition back home, which is a tick against them. I'd love to do a flying circus of Pegasus Knights but I don't think they'd be too effective.

Tomb Kings
You know, I'd really like the chance to do these guys. I had an Undead army back in 4th but when 5th edition came around they were split into wet and dry (I.e. Vampires and Tomb Kings) and most of my old stuff fitted in with Vampires so that's the direction I took. That said, I really like the look and feel of them, but am a little worried at their old and slightly flawed army book.

Other Games

Battlefleet Gothic
I'm really on a bit of a spaceship kick at the moment and I really wouldn't mind getting a fleet for this. The main issue with that is that back home I've got large numbers of Imperial, Chaos, Ork, Eldar and Space Marine fleets, so I'd either have to double up on models or start a completely new fleet, neither of which I particularly like the sound of right now.

Full Thrust
As seen here, I am also interested in Ground Zero Games' Full Thrust, and I might consider purchasing a fleet or two from their website. My main issue with this is that I'm not overly keen on the collective look of any of the fleets (as a whole; individual ships I enjoy the look of). Especially as I'm a Trekkie and thus would much rather be making and using Star Trek ships in that scale.

So, right now, I find myself in an awkward situation. I want to do some modelling, but I have no clue what I really should do. Any and all advice would be welcomed on this matter, even if it is to advise me of something else I've not mentioned yet.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

If you're in Southern Japan make friends with an American in the military so they can get the shit cheap for you

Other than that, it sounds like you might enjoy Necrons. Lizardmen would also be a pretty good choice.

Really though, that's the problem with living in Japan. Pretty much everything is going to be more expensive.

A suggestion,, slightly different, would be that of Raven Guard. They've currently got a few nice kits available (the upgrade kit from FW, and Sanguinary Guard, the wings and so forth), and could be played as a very elite force - attempts to remake Shrike's Wing with Vanguard Vets would give a low model count, with a fairly open range of modelling concepts.

Check with a friend in the UK/USA to see if he cannot get it for you then ship it to you.

Hell Zenai or CV in Malaysia could help you there. I'm sure with bulk purchase it will be cheaper.

It does sound like you like necrons. And I must point out that while they have weaknesses they also have some unexpected strengths like mobility, "No way" I here people cry until they realise how mobile they are. The best part is that their weakness makes games much more tactical not just point and shoot. I enjoy playin them no matter what. Also if you convert your elites it becomes quite cheap.

I also advise BFG as that is another VERY tactical game and isn't expensive to get into especially second hand models. However it sounds like you have alot already so it might not be the best option.

Have you looked into buying from other countries and shipping it there? I know a lot of the Aussies and Canadians do that. I'm sure it would be cheaper than those prices in Japan.

Holy Shit! The prices are criminal :sadnshocked: But yeah, if you want I can try to hook you up with my guy to see whether or not he can help you out to get cheaper models for you. I think he said if he can ship models to people in Australia and still beat the Australian prices despite the shipping cost.

Sadly, I live in central Japan, and I have no clue where I could meet American military personnel.

That would be a really great idea... If it weren't for the fact that Raven Guard are one of the two Space Marine armies I own back home. Admittedly they aren't even glued up, but I don't really fancy buying an army that I already own the models for, even if they are in another country and thus I can't currently use them.

That is certainly an option. I do have a British Credit Card and thus could order through the internet, from GW themselves or from an independent retailer. In fact, GW Japan even has instructions for Japanese people to use GW UK Mail Order for things they can't get over here. However, I am somewhat worried by the potential cost of such endeavours, especially with regard to any kind of Import Tax as well as the postage costs. Having just looked this up (point 5.1 on this webpage), the Import Tax for GW products seems to be 4.6%, which doesn't seem to be that bad - I don't suppose that if I purchased from the UK, I'd be able to avoid paying VAT since I'll be paying Japanese Import Tax instead?

I really do enjoy the Necron army as a whole. The models look great, the background is quite cool, and I love their special rules. I know they don't play the same way on the tabletop as in Dawn of War, but that's not really that important considering how well I know the tabletop game. I'm just worried about how hampered they are by their inherent weaknesses in 5th Edition (namely Phase Out and Sweeping Advances). I've spent a lot of time playing with weaker armies over the past 5 years (Dogs of War and Warriors of Chaos (pdf file, not army book) in WFB, Daemonhunters and Ulthwé Strike Force in 40k) and, to be honest, I'm not that fond of doing so any more - fighting uphill battles in almost every game gets a little tedious after a while.

As for BFG. Well, I'll let my model collection speak for itself.
Imperial Navy

6 plastic Cruisers (to be magnetised so I can use any configuration)
1 Retribution
1 Emperor
3 Dauntless
6 Firestorms
6 Swords
8 Cobras
1 Vengeance/Avenger/Exorcist (to be magnetised)
1 Blackstone Fortress (to be magnetised for Imperial or Chaos use)

Chaos

6 Cruisers (again, to be magnetised)
1 Despoiler
1 Desolator
3 Infidels
3 Iconoclasts
3 Idolators

Eldar

1 Void Stalker
2 Eclipses
2 Shadows
3 of each Escort

Orks

4 Terror Ships
2 Kill Kroozers
3 Ravagers
15 Onslaughts
16 Brute Ram Ships
6 Savages

Space Marines

1 Battle Barge
3 Strike Cruisers
1 Grey Knight Strike Cruiser
So with regard to BFG, I've got quite a lot of stuff for each of those fleets (though the Marines are a little on the small side). I wouldn't really want to buy even more stuff for any of those fleets since I've got that lot waiting for me back home, but none of the other available fleets (Dark Eldar, Craftworld Eldar, Tau, Tyranids, AdMech, Necrons) really interest me, other than the Necrons (but they have their own issues on the tabletop). If I were to do this, I'd probably want to do Imperial Navy or Chaos, but with what models I already have, I'm loathe to do that. I suppose I could go for a Voss fleet, using the Segmentum Obscurus list and having the majority of my vessels be Apocalypse, Endeavour, Endurance, Defiant and Falchion class, since those are all models I don't own.

Yeah, don't I know it. I know things are bad for you, since I've personally seen the prices of GW products in Malaysia, but this is something else, isn't it?

I may well take you up on that offer. Could you enquire into it for me, please?

Thanks to everyone who's posted so far. You've all given me things to think upon. Cheers

I live in Australia, the prices here arn't as bad as that, but I still don't buy from here.
I actually order in bulk from a UK store Buy4lessonline, and I would save around 50% including shipping. The UK Pound has dropped lower now, so I'm actually itching to order some more, a week ago I might have been paying a third of the Australian prices.

Also, my Friend bought an entire Necron Army from Buy4lessonline in one go, it was about a year ago, they still had the Megaforce box sets.

Alas, I just checked, and they no longer have the megaforce, however here is the necron section of there website. They do most armies as well and it's especiialy cheap when you buy them in x3 sets.

Main point is, it's a very good, and very viable idea to ship things in from other countries.

Goodluck with whatever you choose to start collecting.

I suggest you check out Maelstorm Games.

According to my knowledge they ship for free around the world if you buy more than 10£ worth, and they are generally very cheap compared to other shops I've had the pleasure of checking out.

EDIT: Thought I'd edit it in that they might take few weeks to reach you, but that shouldn't be a problem. Unless those damn Icelanders begin the dance with their dynamites around ze volcanos again. >
