Default Pre-heresy

Not sure where this would go (space marine or chaos) so I thought this would be safest.

anyways, I'm starting a pre-heresy Thousand Sons army and wanted to know what sort of special/heavy weapons they had access to pre-heresy/heresy era. such as, melt/plasma guns, rocket launcher, flamers and such.
I know what vehicles were available, but I haven't found too much on war-gear.
thanks.

Wargear is pretty much whatever the Chaos Codex allows, minus the Daemonic stuff.

Obviously if you're Pre-Heresy you won't be fielding Rubric Marines - I'd use the Space Marine Codex to represent them, fill both HQ slots with Librarians. In terms of equipment, anything but Land Speeders, Ironclads and Land Raider variants (the standard one is okay) should be fine, unless I've forgotten something glaring.

A linked question.

Would they have more access to plasma weapons?

In theory, Plasma would be more common.

According to fluff I'd avoid storm bolters to. Based on books though they had them pre-heresy so I think someone in the books made a fluff woops.

I'm unsure on drop pods too.

That would be an Abnettism, I'm afraid. Mr. Abnett has written that Horus carries a storm bolter, which I suppose could be possible, "give the primarchs the best equipment!"

You still take a storm bolter... you just model it like a twin linked bolter. They are basically the same, just made different so chaos and SMs wouldn't have the exact same wargear.

yeah, I'm still unsure of what codex to use. I might just bash some rules/make some house rules and put together a house rules codex. Since the GW I go to is pretty coll like that.

As for plasma/melta weapons? I've heard they were uncommon but not so uncommon that they wouldn't be used.

Both Melta and Plasma use was fairly common, roughly the same numbers as in M41. We can tell from Battle for the Abyss (despite being a horrid book) that Meltas were used due to the Word Bearers deploying several marines with them in their hunt for the Loyalists, and the Loyalists are familiar with them as well.

Plasma was in wide use, especially by the Death Guard due to their way of waging war. Since they were almost entirely infantry and Tactical squad based, all their Tac squads had a larger number of special weapons- especially Plasma due to its strength and range.

Drop-Pods were not in use as such. There may have been a small percentage of Legions using Dreadclaw Assault boats, but that was right before the Heresy and the main use was by the Heretic Legions. The main way to reach a planet's surface was the Stormbird Gunship, which is a predecessor of the Thunderhawk.

The best way to represent Pre-Heresy Legions with GW published rules is Codex: Space Marines, with slight adjustments to your list based on which Legion you are playing. If you are looking elsewhere for rules, personally I find the Tempus Fugitives Campaign supplements to be a good place to go. I suggest sticking to the "Great Crusade" rules, since the later ones are getting more and more based on the Horus Heresy books- to the point they're getting a bit ridiculous.
