Default Hit & Run question

If a unit with hit & run loses an assault, do they have to take a leadership test to see if they are forced to fall back (and possibly get swept) or can they just take their initiative test to try to disengage (hence avoiding any chance to get swept)?

They take leadership, and then they may attempt to use hit and run.

Sorry, I guess I should explain why this is so.

Leadership (And no retreat saves) are the resolution of the combat. Hit and run doesn't happen until combat ends, and Combat Resolution is still part of combat.

Thanks. The phrase about not being subjected to sweeping advances confused me. I guess that just means you aren't subjected to a possible 2nd attempt at a sweeping advance.

So a lot of good that rule does for Tau in one of those new battle missions. The getting swept part was problem part of the assault. I guess if I am lucky enough to not get swept the first time, then I can bail.

You use hit and run at the end of the assault phase, as in right before you end your turn. I re-read it and realized I was doing it wrong too...

Furthermore it says "Unit with this ability that are locked in combat..." and of course you don't know if you're locked in combat until it's been resolved.

"Units that have one or more model in base contact with enemies are said to be ‘locked in combat’."

pg 35

Whether or not a unit is locked is determined after assault moves but before any blows are struck. Fun times.
