Default Purchasing Weapon Upgrades as Redundant Systems

I was just browsing through the seeker missile thread and someone mentioned Hunter Killers. Now we all know that the points can generally be better spent elsewhere as a single shot at (usually) BS3 isn't particularly helpful in the majority of circumstances, especially as it makes the vehicle count as firing a main weapon (because of the high str) thus reducing movement and preventing it from firing much else.

But I would probably still buy them. Simply because on a 'weapon destroyed' result it's generally far better to remove a HK than a 'proper' weapon.

So would you/do you buy Hunter Killer Missiles (and other additional weapons such as pintle-mounted bolters) simply for their defensive benefit regardless of their offensive potential, and is it/would it be a cost effective defense considering the relatively low chance that someone is going to get a weapon destroyed result?

Discuss (this admittedly minor issue :P)!

Since it's the opponent who gets to choose which weapon is destroyed, I highly doubt he'll go for the HK over the vehicle's main weapon. In that sense, the only reason to get a HK is so that the vehicle isn't completely weaponless after all the other weapons have been blown away, or it can act as a buffer against an immobilized result (though by that point, the situation's rather desperate anyway).

Remember, the weapon to be removed is chosen by the person who fired the shot, the attacker, and not the other way around. However, having the HK on there if I remove your storm bolter means you do at least have something left to fire with.

Damn, got beat posting this :P

Doh. :P Are there skimmers that can take this kind of weapon? I can't think of any off the top of my head. But it would mean that you could potentially save yourself from a nasty immobilized result.

The Tau, who don't have Fast Skimmers besides Piranhas.
And before you ask, only Fast Skimmers can go Flat Out

Can you imagine how awesome Seekers would be if you got to choose the weapon removed though?

On the flip side HK's and pintle mounted storm bolters would be just as annoying.
