Default A check on the rules

Apologise if this can be found somewhere else but I have to ask about some of the Independant Character Rules.
When is it possible to directly target an independant character?
The impression I got from the rule book is that the only time you cannot directly target one is if they are joined in a squad. Unless it's CC in which case your unit must be touching or within 2 inches.

But something I just read mentioned target priority tests occuring when the target is not the closest unit.
Could somebody please clarify this for me.

Thanks in advance,
Scorpios

By what you have described it suggests you are reading 4th edition rules.

In 5th edition, Target priority tests are gone and IC's wandering around on their own can be targetted by shooting.

You can target them by selecting them specifically in assault by being in base contact, or with a special shooting attack. Or obviously if they're alone

ie- Telion, Vindicare assassin, mind war, JotWW

To make it simple:

You can only single out an attached IC in melee and through special attacks that specify that you can.

An IC becomes a seperate unit in assault for rules purposes. In order to allocate attacks to him you must either be in base to base, or be engaged (i.e. within 2" of a guy within base to base).

Also if the IC is a monsterous creature you can target him in shooting phase

Zambia, you may be confusing MCs with Gargantuan Creatures. An MC can not be shot at in close combat.

I think Zambia meant an IC (who is an MC) joining a normal unengaged unit can be singled out.

Monstrous creatures can't join other units save special rules...

Aye, and generally those special rules prevent them from being singled out, like the Tyrant Guard's Shieldwall.
