Default Is the Imperium progressing?

This just recently occurred to me. Now, I'm not talking about technology, culture, religion, blah blah blah. What I'm specifically interested in here, being exceedingly ignorant of Imperial history and what-not, is whether or not The Imperium of Man is actually expanding at all? Is any new territory being conquered, any new systems discovered?

It just seems to me that if not, then annihilation is inevitable for an Empire which, according to all sources, is being assaulted on all sides by many different enemies.

The Imperium is in a constant state of flux, but it is expanding, both culturally and geographically.

Imperial forces do evolve and adapt. For example, the "trench war" style of fighting is now used largely as a last resort, and few armies (with the notable exceptions of Krieg and Baran) choose to fight as siege armies as a preference.

Imperial Crusades also expand the boarders of the Imperium, claiming new worlds every so often. Of course, the problem is that they also lose worlds now and again.

Believe it or not, but the technology of the Imperium is also evolving: The Ad-Mechs lose the ability to build certain equipment, but new STCs are discovered all the time. High-up members of the Mechanicus can, and do, allow modification of an STC template to incorporate more effecient technological properties, and there are plenty of "rogue" invaders (normally hiding safely behind Power Armour, or on a battlefield) who create entirely new vehicles (such as the Ragnarok Mobile Bunker).

I think the Imperium is expanding. With so many huge expanses of space there has to be many more worlds yet to be found and colonized. Most Imperium citizens aren't aware of the Imperium according to the fluff, the Horus Heresy is treated like a silly myth even on Terra. So if these people aren't aware of the Imperium and its greater ideals, surely there are many who are just as ignorant to the threats. It's these pockets of ignorance that would still send out colonizing fleets, expanding their own realms.

I also think it is more than likely that the Administratum and other factions would love the chance to find more rescources, both environmental and manpower wise. Colonizing new planets gives them a fresh source of loyal citizens ready to die for a corpse in a chair.

It is expanding for the sake of GW selling. What would happen if all of the sudden they stoppped discovirning races. GW would go out of business.

Cheers for that. Just wondering. Mainly due to the fact that Tyranids eat worlds and they can't do that forever!

I think the Tyranids are a major mistake... they are a "dynamic" fluff-race in a stalemate universe... 40K will go the way of Battletech if they aren't careful.

if the imperium were to stop the tyranid advance, and say, the tyranid advance would stop on all fronts, them they would slowly die, b/c they me planets to grow. so, technically the nids arent a ustoppable race, in terms of fluff(which i know minimal about,so if i am wrong, its not my fault, its my attention spans)

I've heard that the current hive fleets are only scout fleets, and that the big stuff is coming from the other galaxy as there was no life left
