Default Language of the Imperium

This is somewhat a two-part question:

Is Latin the language of the Imperium? It seems so based on most of the background I've read. Are there any members of the forums here that speak Latin?

I'd like to make a banner for the Tau Human Auxiliaries that says, "For the Greater Good!" and "Down with the Emperor!" but I'll need some help, any ideas?

The Imperium's language is Gothic of which there is two versions. One is High Gothic and seems to at least be *based* in Latin though not all parts translate that well if it is actually Latin. The other is Low Gothic which for lack of better idea is probably English.

RCanine:

It's not really Latin. Those boys at GW just take the image and little bits of sounds from Latin and mix it up with English basically. It's not a real language that they're using at all, but it's more interesting than plain English, so it suits me fine We call it Englatin a lot

I think 42 knows some Latin, otherwise, here's a helpful link:

http://catholic.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/lookdown.pl

It's the University of Notre Dame and it converts English to Latin, though I can't attest for it's accuracy.

Cheers!

I prefer to think they speak German, simply because the German trailer for the Damnatus movie sounded so awesome... then there's the Steel Legion (who use the SS symbol), the Imperial Eagle (similar to the German Eagle), the fact they use "WWII" tech, and are facist (1940s Germany anyone?)... plenty of reasons to make them German.

Thanks! Using the link above, "For the Greater Good" could probably be translated to "A Benefacta Magis" (For the best benefit) or "Ad Superus Meritum" (to the most benefits).

It really depends on how you translate "good". As for "Down with the Emperor"Illiud latine dici non potes (you can't say that in latin), or at least I can't.

There are many languages in the Imperium - lower Gothic is just their common language.

I thought it was a mix between German, Latin, and English but Gothic sounds right.
