Default Games Workshop Tattoos

http://uk.games-workshop.com/legal/c...nt/1/#cannotdo

I was reading the GW IP laws and I noticed this

T-SHIRTS, CLOTHES, TATOOS AND THE LIKE

As always, we cannot allow third parties to obtain money from our intellectual property.

This effectively means that you would either have to buy Games Workshop T-shirts or clothes or make them yourself. You would not be able to sell any t-shirts or clothes that you make.

This also means that we cannot allow tattoos as an acceptable use of our IP as a third party necessarily has to perform the "service."

Now I know of three staff members in Perth who have GW tattoos and I was thinking of getting one myself (Not a fanboy one but rather a Dark Elder Symbol).
I know that GW wants to protect there IP but is this going too far?

It's not out of the ordinary for companies to have policies like this. They are just protecting their IP. Not sure why they had to break it down to tattoos, but what can ya do? And honestly, who'd REALLY be able enforce that? That kind of non sense falls into the "Don't tear the tag off the mattress" type of situation.

I can just picture this situation at a Games Day...

::GW Staff member walks up to a player during a game::

Staff: "Sir I'm going to have to ask you to remove that?"

Player: "Remove what? I haven't rolled for his armor save yet."

Staff: "Uh.. No, not that sir. That tattoo on your arm."

Player: "WHAT?!"

Staff: "Yeah, it's against Corporate Policy, We don't allow any images, logos, or likenesses of our intellectual property to be used on any form of material we haven't authorized."

Player: "But... this is my skin!"

Staff: "Uhhhh, yeah I realize that. You're still breaking the law."

Player: "Do you realize how much I paid for this?!"

Staff: "That's the point, sir. You didn't pay us."

You can pretty much assume how that conversation would finish. ;D

With somebody breaking out the Imperial issue Cheese Grater? - H

I think the idea here is one similar to a number if IP policies. What in effect happens is that the companies that make said items can't offer them outright. They have to be requested as special order by a customer. For example with the tattoos, the parlor can't offer to do any image or symbol of any army in GWs range, however if a customer requests something like that they will do it as a 'one time' thing.

It seems a little dodgy but it is within the letter of the law.

Game Workshop assume (correctly) that the vast majority of people in the world have no idea what the laws are, so they can make sweeping, and quite frankly, ridiculous assertions that they have absolutely no way of enforcing.

Your probably right about the vast majority, but wrong about how the policy is ridiculous. It's a bit of a cover-our-rear policy than anything. By stating tattoos they insure no place offers them. Like I said, you can request it, they just can't advertise it. When it comes to law, speicially in courts, your case can depend greatly on a wording. By making a statment that covers as many things as they can they make sure to cover all the bases in the event it does become an issue. However, I'd be very suprised if a tattoo parlour somehwere actaully makes it's business on doing tattos based on GW images and symbols.

If you could get your mate to do you a freebie then, it would be legal?

Seems so. Copyrights are quite easy to get around if you know how.

Disney is probably a bigger intellectual property nut than most of these companies nowaday, yet they said it themselves they're okay with people having tattoos of their characters on them, AS LONG as they aren't advertised publically and/or used for profit.

If anything, having a GW tatoo would be a bit of free advertising for the company.

"Oh, cool tatoo! What does it mean?"

"It's a Games Workshop thing. Check it out, there's loads of cool pictures in their books."

There've been times when I've considered getting an aquila and barcode on my shoulder, but it is so hard to find a good picture of an aquila these days.
