Well, what are you looking for? If you're looking at something similar to goblins (Mass Numbers) you'd have three basic choices: Orks, Nids, and Guard. They all function very differently, so it's important to take a look at things before you choose.

What type of army are you interested in? Do you have much interest in fluff or does it not matter to you? What models look nice to you?

Eldar are an army of sophisticated specialists, and are maneuverable so they can hit hard and fast and match up each unit to it's preferred target. I'd say their optimum range for engagement (the range most of their weapons are) is medium-close. Luckily all their vehicles are fast so they can get there quick and stay there. Used correctly the Eldar put the 'frag' in fragile 8).

That all being said, many people (not me) find them difficult as a beginning 40k army.

One of these factors is that they are extremely fragile. Only the ~200pt Phoenix Lords, the expensive Wraithguard, or the even more expensive Wraithlords are T4+. Oh and Jetbikes... Meaning most anti-light vehicle fire and Heavy Infantry guns will cause Instant Death. Also, the armor worn by the majority of the Eldar army is around 4+ so aforementioned weapons will be able to pierce.

Given that the majority of the army is T3, they're relatively expensive, and they don't have stellar armor saves the army on the whole is quite the glass cannon. Bolters wound on a 3+, and Pulse Rifles wound on a 2+... Heck, even Lasguns wound on a 4+ :P. That's where all the mobility comes in. You have to engage the right enemy units at the right time with your units and support yourself.

Marines they ain't.

You can't put a squad of Dire Avengers on an Objective and expect them to survive the game. You have to be moving and weaving and taking bits out of the enemy, making it possible to move onto Objectives at the last minute and win. It's often a highly mechanized play-style usually, although there are Iyanden style lists that use Wraithguard and Wraithlords extensively, making them slower (but far more durable) than the average Eldar list. But even those styles use fast units to prevent entrapment or from being overwhelmed.

Try to borrow someone's Codex and take a good look at it. Do some games proxy-ing (and don't be discouraged if you lose the first few ) with someone's models (most peoples are pretty laid-back so as long as you're polite and respectful they'll probably say ok) to get a feel for the army. That way there's no investment that makes you not want to switch.

Nice helpful posts Ahab. Have a +1 cookie. Fish Ead

Why thank you Fish Ead. Ahab

There are a few good ways to pick armies (and I think the GW site is almost right about this one):

1) Choose the army you think looks coolest. That's what I did for my first army (Tau)... I didn't try any games, or read any fluff, heck I didn't even read the main rules before I choose

2) Choose the army that has the playstyle you want. Look at the Codexes pretty carefully. Ask "Which Phase do I want to dominate?"

If you want to be the best army at moving you really should look at Eldar and Dark Eldar... Eldar do shooting a little more and DE are much more CC oriented,

if you want to bring a lot of ranged firepower with a mix of mobility take a look at Tau & IG,

and if CC is your game you'll need to look around a bit more. Chaos Space Marines and Orks both have good potential here. As do Chaos Daemons, Tyranids, and Dark Eldar (they're supposed to get a new 'dex soon). As you can see there are a lot of CC oriented armies...

finally, you might just want an army that's tough as nails... Necrons, CSM, or Space Marines are the best options here. The cool thing is that CSM and Space Marines can have a lot of different builds so you can be a durable CC army, or a durable shooty army, etc... Necrons pretty much have 2 settings: Lotsa Warriors footslogging &/or Destroyer spam (read the 'dex. You'll get it )

*whew*
3) You like the back story/"fluff" of an army. Maybe you really like the idea of commanding the endless swarm of devouring bugs from a different universe (Tyranids). Or perhaps the ultimate defenders of Mankind sound neat to you, go take a look at the Space Marines.

If you have a few of these reasons combine and point towards one army try it out. You'll spend a lot of time painting and looking at the models so choosing ones you really like is important IMO. As is enjoying the background. Given that you haven't played before playstyle might be less of an issue (it wasn't for me :funny...

Go ask around at specific boards when you start really considering one over the others.

Keep in mind fluff, gameplay, modeling, even how you will build and paint them. I used to have some Chaos Daemons, but they never got off the ground because I hated building metal models.

Above all though, remember that it's your army. Don't let somebody talk you into playing something you don't feel great about, or aren't sure about their playstyle.

Pick the army with the coolest models and fluff. Chosen my 4/5 armies this way and I have yet to regret any one of them.
