Default Just a FYI about GW's "measuring sticks"

I was using one of the red sticks I had lying around to measure out a cut I was about to make and noticed it created a discrepancy with previous cuts I'd made using a regular ruler. I decided to compare the measuring stick's markings to a real ruler and low and behold, it's quite a bit off: You lose about 1/16" of an inch for ~ every 4 inches on the stick. > I've never used these stupid things in games unless I was desperate but it was a little bit of a surprise to me to discover after years of owning them that they aren't even accurate. Geez, talk about a crappy product: How hard is it to make an accurate ruler? :

Well, maybe GW have invented their own scale, alike to the inch in every way except the length.
The games all use this 'GW inch', so you cant use any other measurement, which means you have to buy their measuring sticks.

That would be just like GW..

1/64" out? That's not too bad...unless you're measuring the range on a 72" Railgun...

Not that it would happen. The sticks are just there for quick troop movements. I wouldn't worry about such a tiny difference, since 99% of people don't measure EXACTLY anyway.

Actually it is quite bad: The 18" mark on the stick is actually ~17 7/16". It might not seem like such a big deal but it puts anyone using one at a pretty distinct advantage. E.g., you jump forward with your crisis suit and discover your just over 12" away from your opponent's assault marines so you can't rapid fire. You then jump back, assuming that means your >18" away from your opponent and that there's no way his assault marines can reach you . The next turn your opponent takes out his ruler and discovers.... you're less than 18" away! Ouch. The big problem is that these small errors will compound as you repeatedly move.

I suppose you are right on that, though I think most people use tape measures anyway since 18" isn't enough for the majority of measurements.

Generally I have a talk with my opponant about ranges before the battle, agreeing that units have to deploy MORE then 18-24" away from each other, so there's no turn 1 charges. I don't care how far away they are, as long as they don't actually assault me on turn 1. I'm not going to quibble over a few millimeters!

Oh thats dumb, anyway I just use a tape measure as it is accurate (Unlike your spelling - H) and it stretches as far as you need it to.
