If you want to get into Space Marines anyway, it would be a really great deal for you to get the Assault on Black Reach (aka AoBR for short). The rule book that comes with it doesn't have any of the extra fluff that the main rule book has, but everything you need to know about playing the game is in it, and it is much less cumbersome to cary around with you. Sure, you aren't intending to play Orks, but I'm sure if you ask around, you will find an Ork player who will be willing to either buy the models off of you, or trade you the Space Marine models from their AoBR set. The Tau can wait for while because they require a more in depth knowledge of the game to play effectively, and being new to the game you will probably lose an awful lot with them. I first started with Tau during 4th ed when the rules were more in their favor, and I still got owned a lot. Space Marines, on the other hand, are a much more forgiving race/army to start with as they are durable to both shooting and assault, and can do both of those things well. Learn to play the game with an army that can take part in the entire battle, and not one that avoids 1/3 of it. Besides, there is the chance that you will win as much as you lose, and for a beginner that is pretty reassuring and will help your confidence and enjoyment of the gaming aspect of the hobby. That's just my humble oppinion though.
Best of luck to you, Infidel, and if you have any more questions you have only to ask. MortarGrunt.

The Black Reach box set is a great value, so the GW guy didn't lead you astray there. If you are considering building Marines or Orks at some point, it's not a bad set to get. (If you don't want the other half, you can try to find someone who wants them and trade the Orks for Marines, for example.)
If you are truly just starting out, it would be a good set since it comes with the basic rules, templates, a few dice (which you will need more!) and enough minis to play a couple small games. Next, you'll need the Codex for your army. Then you can expand from there. |

well the book is 50 dollars, usually the aobr is 60. thats 110 dollars worth of stuff for 65, and your not even paying for all of it! Whether you want to play sm's or orks, or dont want to play either, your still getting over 55 dollars off. Get the deal, its a no brainer.

The price is really cheep, even I got one to fill the ranks of my Orks (though I'm using only half of the Boys, and the Warboss) - but I just wanted to have a couple of Marines for painting, the templates and an additional rulebook. I have both Books, the big one, and the AoBR-booklet, and let me tell you: Rules-wise, there is no difference. There are even the scenarios in the booklet (which were missing from the BfM-booklet, IIRC). The fluff-part of the new edition (and the campaign part, etc.) is, imo, not as good as the 4th Edition one, so there is no reason to prefer the BOB over the AoBR-set, especially if you have strong leanings towards one (or both) of the armies included in the set. So, go Black Reach. Trust me, when you open that box, you'll be like: "OMG! This is so cool! Look at this! Look at that! Waaah! Deffkoptas! Cybot! Terminators! This rocks! I can't believe I even THOUGHT about buying the BOB instead of this!" Cheers, -Bone PS: But do yourself a favor: Don't PLAY only with the AoBR-minis - they are highly unbalanced; and especially the lack of special rules hurts the Orks more than the Space Marines. In addition, the army selection is biased towards the Marines - There's no way the Orks can get rid of the Cybot in CC, their only hope are the Deffkoptas, and they die very easy to the Multimelta and the Missile Launcher. Furthermore, the Termies are just unstoppable... >

yeah, and even if you dont want them, you can put together and sell the left over minis to people who do play orks. and if you are starting marines eventually, i'd keep the AoBR SM's ina box somewhere until you do start them up.
