Default Arms race.....

Does anyone else see this trend in warhammer 40k, one race gets beefed, so to balance another one is beefed and so on, the races that are less popular, therefor making less money, get left behind, yes eventually each race gets its day, but what about all that time inbetween? And why do they need the change? the races could just be left in a balanced state, I know, what a crazy idea. If they continue this arms race all the races will begin to resemble space marines, now smurfs get a lot of crap for being GWs glory boys and for being a well rounded, strong race, but that is absolutely fine for a single race to be that way, but once you make it stronger, you have to make everyone stronger and the only ending is a 40k filled with space marines, just some are green and some have pointy ears, basically the game would suck. The only thing they should update is the game rules in general and the look of the models, so that instead of an arms race, you have an evolution of what war would be like in the 41st millienium, with diversified, balanced races.

In that case, so is sex. Therefore, pornstars and prostitutes are professional athletes.

Well it's in General 40K now... so somebody moved it.

The phenomenon is known as "Codex Creep", and it is pretty much entirely responsible for everything wrong with GW's games. LoTR was raped by Codex Creep, and 40K will be as well (Tyranids do not look like a good portent of what is to come...).

And the reason for "Codex Creep" is quite simple, Money.

Why? Because after a while people get used to an army it either can either not sell well at all or just be stuck in a rut profit wise, so to speak. If this is the case then GW are still earning from the said army but not as much as could be earnt. Thats something called Greed. Every time either a new army is created or an old army is 'revamped' there is definitive hype about it which attracts new customers and makes others think "Wow, a new version, they look so cool! I want them". This is normal and what GW takes advantage of, just visit the Tyranids board now and you will see what i mean.

This is what GW want, sure they do make changes to the army but only marginal, they merely take criticisms about this being wrong, that being wrong etc and make those changes in the new version. But in the new version they always upset the balance one way or another, be it a minor niggle or major mishap. This means that there would be place for a new version after that, and after that etc. So each time GWs profits inflate.

Because at the end of the day GW is a business, and businesses are there to make money, 'Codex Creep' being the most effective way of doing so.

There is probably more variation in the whole Nid range than any other army. Think about the various incarnations of the 'Fex, Warriors etc that are about.

It goes quite a bit deeper. It's like the cash-cow. A one-hit wonder that really takes off. However, they have to keep people interested because shockingly good things tend to wear off just as fast. So it has to be better each time and over too much time, it simply becomes a mess and you start to see the signs when the end is near. The chaos codex should be testament enough, even with Tyranid getting all kinds of retarded powerful (like they weren't already powerful?) to get sales up. Every time a new one is released it has to "keep up with the johnsons" and will continually get insane. However, an oddity to this particular game is that the rules keep getting more and more simplified because the target audience age range has been going lower and lower. So soon, we will have an all plastic miniature ranged based game with piles and piles of books, updates, etc with absolutely no special rules, a few basic rules, where everything is just all the same with a different model to represent it if we keep on course.

Just as an example of what I mean by all this, for Magic players out there who played since the beginning, look what happened to the game after Urzas Saga and you know exactly what I mean. Game got really popular, too many "good" things happened, game had to one-up itself to keep up with it's new tempo and ruined itself to become just a pile of cardboard, or in our case, plastic.

So why am I still addicted to this plastic-heroine? I have no clue. The history and idea of the game is just great--I just wish the manifestation of it would mellow out and stop trying to "win" with every new thing. I see nothing wrong with simply re-releasing things, without much change, or simply adding new armies instead of just redoing old armies to be totally new each time. But that's probably why I don't work for them....

I think the death-knell for Warhammer 40K has been rung. The game is going to die, and not prettily. They will simply restart it with a totally new format, revamping the whole lot like they did going from 2nd to 3rd Edition.
