Default "Prevalence of Cover Saves"

Everyone talks about how many cover saves there are in 5th Edition. About how "pretty much everything" has a 4+ save and this makes anything harder to shift.

Seriously? In all the 5th Ed games I've played/seen there hasn't been any more or less cover saves than in 4th Ed. Actually, with TLoS there's probably less.

So what are you guys talking about please?

Crikey! This crazy clown causes commotion like the coming of Christ. That all depends on how your tables are set up I suppose. Most everything gives a save therefor there are more cover saves.

Isn't the only real change to cover saves in the form of units confering cover saves on those behind? That means that there is one extra cover save and in 4th instead of the cover save, you had to actually test for leadership to shoot at the unit. I'd rather them have a 4+ save than risk not getting a shot in at all.

You must be playing small games on big tables. Shooting through an enemy unit or shooting through one of your own units grants the enemy a 4+ Cover. In the 12 games I have had so far, I have had a 4+ cover more times than not.

It's been a very, very long time since I've seen people shoot through anything.

I tend to play 1500pts on a 4'x4' board.

I've gotta say that my experiences with 5th have been the same as Veq's. We have more cover saves than shots without cover saves.

I find it is quite noticable when playing against armies with lots of models and poor armour saves. Especially when they take a shooty approach.

Obviously, when you play against the ubiquitous MEQ armies, with lower model counts and armour saves that are better than cover, you see it used less.

Everyone suspected this would be the case from the start of 5th. And that's pretty much how I'm seeing it.

That's a very good point and I can't believe I haven't seen it.

Every game of 5th I've seen so far has been essentially Marines vs Marines. Or Chaos or Necrons etc - therefore armour save is better than cover save.

GEQ here, not much difference on my part. Since the intervening units thing, I've been smarter on how I position my troops whether I want to be in cover or not.

But otherwise, it's not much of a difference.

Tau player here.

For the following armies I have faced or watched, the new cover rules have come into effect for every game.

X5 Tyranid armies (3 were Nidzilla, the other two were a swarm and a weird shooty elite list a kid likes)

X4 IG (One, sometimes two of these armies are SIGAFH rip-offs for all intents and purposes)

X2 Tau (Other Tau. One is static, the other is a crappy hybrid)

X12-14 SM's (The number slightly fluctuates with the enlisted being deployed or coming in, usually every SM player has found some way of using the new cover rules. Not all do though, the one Deathwing guy gets wiped out all the time when he could easily grab some cover)

X6 CSM's (God I hate Lash, half these armies use it to deny cover even when they use it themselves.)

X1 SOB/Inquisition (He loves troops and overlapping combat choke points)

X3 Eldar (Whew, two of them use rangers to deadly effect with the new cover rules the other swarms with foot sloggers and gets his fair share.)

X2 Necron (Usually, they aren't as worried wit cover for anything but their destroyers)

X4 Orks (Heh what can I say? The best Orks use the cover walls just like they did in the good old days)

It's changed combat load-outs drastically in my area. Generally, higher weight of fire is more popular than AP right now.
