Default Is fantasy less popular than 40k

Is fantasy less popular than 40k? At my local store, people mainly play 40k and some fantasy however, it shut down already. So i go to other store, they dont carry fantasy stuff, they told me fantasy is dead, and no one play fantasy at their shop. I just wondering is it fantasy really dead or just my area, Fresno

Fantasy is played very rarely at my local shop in Santa Monica (Aero Hobbies). They do carry it, and sell some, but 40k is the real breadwinner.

40k seems easier to get into, and is sci fi, which is more "in" these years, it seems. Additionally, Warmachine/Hordes has pulled people away from Fantasy in favor of a more skirmish oriented and cheaper hobby.

Talking with some of our club, the consensus is that, if they had the money, they'd probably get into Fantasy too, but most can only afford one hobby, and since everyone else is big into 40k, that's the way to go.

In my local GW 40K is the mainstay, but Fantasy does still get a fair bit of attention. However, when I joined a gaming club that was mainly made up of mature gamers (40+ yoa) 40K had been abandoned and they only played Fantasy. It remains a predominantly Fantasy club, but me and a few of the younger members I brought with me have reintroduced 40K and it's booming again. Fantasy isn't dead, but it takes longer to learn and get good at, I think.

It also depends on your location. Fantasy apparently has both much higher sales and a higher following in Europe than it does in the Americas.

Fantasy around 2 years ago made a comeback in Australia with a vengeance. Now it's just as popular in 40k in terms of store games.

But before that it was so dead. Like at one point Warmaster was more popular than Fantasy.

My buddy who has attended some of the larger GW events in the US said that the 40k tables outnumbered WFB by almost double.

Here in my town, it depends on where you play. One shop has a lot of Fantasy players while the others (3) are almost exclusively 40k, although most of them sell both.

Nobody here plays LotR though.

My area is pretty much predominately 40k. No one really bothers with fantasy as most of the fantasy genre has been filled with Warmachine/Hordes.

Personally I have always liked fantasy more in terms of balance and rules, it's just that no one plays it so I'm just going to stick with 40k. I guess fantasy is a little more time consuming too, so that's a bit of a detractor for ppl at my club.

In our shop we are mainly dominated by fantasy and some games of LOTR,

We do though get a few games of 40k.

I have spoken with one of the regional distributors about this. His take was pretty much the same as stated above. Warhammer Fantasy is very popular in the UK and other places in Europe, but it has never had quite as much of a following in the United States.
