Hmmm, daemons of chaos is quite hard for begginres as DS'ing hurts a bit if it goes wrong... i'd go for tyranids, marines or necrons...

I must Space Marines. Nice to play. Easy e.g. more forgiving. Cool looking as well. Plus they're one in the Starter Set e.g. Assault on Black Reach.

Orks can be easy to play (if you have an uber mass of boyz armed with rokkits plus two KFF meks for example), you simply run, waaagh, shoot and assault. the only problem is that you need to buy/assemble/paint a hell of a lot of orks :P.

Orks would be too many models to paint. Space Marines have a reasonable amount of models and fairly easy to paint.

Indeed, that's the set back I mentioned, yeah SM's are simpler to paint (though, myself; I can't paint them, but I reckon I can paint orks, which reminds me...)

He should look at the GW website and decide which army to use based on the blurb and the models on display.

He should choose an army that appeals to him at least visually. A friend of mine collected Tau and Space Marines for 6 months before settling on Tyranids. The reason?? He was told that they were beginner friendly.

He's much happier with Tyranids, an army whose fluff and models he likes. One can win with any army given a decent amount of practice and active play.

True. I choose Imperial Guard because I like the story of the humble and very mortal Guardsmen. Their fluff is also very rich. The other armies are either fanboy~ish or severe lack of character :

I started with Marines, but never really got into them that much, before I settled on Tau, and they fit my style of play. However, now that I actually found a Chapter of Space Marines that I like, I'm dusting off my old models, cleaning the moldlines off them, and stripping the paint.

But tell him to start with what he likes the look of most. If he really loves Demons, then refer him to the Deamons, as long as he likes metal and the like. If not, tell him about Chaos Marines.

I have to agree with Zenai on this. ABR just came out and is a very good buy. I see youre an ork player. Have him split it with your or something. If you hand him the SM he could learn with that force until he figures out what forces he wants.
