Default AoBR Starter Set

Can you make a decent army for either Orks or SMs from 2 AoBR starter boxes? I'm asking because I was considering using the boxes as a jumping off point for starting 2 new armies and I figured after I had spent the money on 2 starters and 2 new codexs I would like to play for a while before spending more money.

Yes, both armies are legal and I estimate around 500 points of Orks and 500-600 points of Space Marines, not counting obscene wargear setups someone may choose to use

Thanks man, but I was thinking more in terms of can I play something built with them and not get stomped. I realize that the mix of troops is not the most competitive but if I don't have the chance to win a game with either army then I'd be stuck buying a bunch of extra stuff right off the bat anyway.

In my opinion, the armies are pretty solid for a starter set, or even independent starter sets. I'll admit that the Terminator squad probably won't see much effective use for its point in a game the size of which you can play out of the box compared to, say, more tactical marines.
That being said, one of the things GW looks to be counting on when a player buys the AOBR set is the "hmm... I'd bet that another Tac squad would go really well in here..." factor.

I do, by the way, have the opinion that you're set up with a pretty nice marine army if you add some more tac marines to the AOBR mix. Competitive? Not too much? Playable, enjoyable, and winnable? Without a doubt.

I don't play Orks, so I can't give solid counsel on their behalf, but they seem to be a nice mix of boyz and toys.

I know so many people who are buying 2-3 AoBR boxes just because you can pretty much field a decent sized army with everything included. So yes, it's definatly one of the best bargins you'll find around and 2-3 boxes will create a decent base force. As Nuke said, it may not be a competative army, but it'll still be a perfectly playable, and fun, army!

I tell you what, it is a nice box and extremely tempting. I'm even just considering getting a couple just to have two small forces (and something fun to paint!) to play around with.

The Orks in the AoBR is definately worthwhile.

First of all you get the new plastic Warboss with Power Klaw. This is a first as the Orks don't have a Warboss with a Power Klaw and if you do get 2 of the boxes then you have one more Warboss to convert into a bike-ridin' Warboss WITH POWER KLAW...did I mention that it has a Power Klaw

Secondly you get a decent number of Boyz (i'm thinking 20?). It's a good solid number of Boyz and with the addition of a box or 2 of regular boyz you've got 2+ great mobs

Thirdly you get 10(?) Nobs. Nobs are hard-as-nails when you give them upgrades (such as a Painboy) and it's always nice to see a number of them in a starter box

Finally you get 3 of the new looking Deffkoptas. These things alone are worth getting the box. Despite how fun it is to Poorhammer these guys the official looking ones are nice to have

So the Orks as well as Marines are getting an AMAZING deal. I personally wouldn't want to buy 2 boxes considering that it doesn't have Ork Warbikes (which I need :/ ) but the Orks are getting a deal and the Marines are getting a few nice things also.

I was looking through the book earlier in the week, it was something like.. 550 points worth of marines (not including extra upgrades), and 460 points of orks or something. I'm gonna pick my set up tomorrow in about 12 hours time =)

Getting two of them, adding in say, a trukk, gives you two 1000 point armies! for only a bit more than a battleforce! It's awesome. I actually have two on order but might just get one for now.

Edit: Turns out its 585 points of Marines, and 450 points of Orks.

I just bought it today, the first one at the store. It makes me happy. It looks beautiful. I am going to play a song that truly recognizes the epic of this moment.

its a nice army. Its got me tempted to start up marines with the set. I've always wanted a dread, and five termintors are awsome, you can always use more tactical marines, and that commander is pretty cool looking.

However first, I shall finish my WHFB Empire army, then, after the Marines codex is released, and after the "new army syndrome" has ended, then maby, just maby, I will start a new Marine army. Salamanders for the win!
