Default Which army is better for a begginer?

My brother has been playing 40k for a while, and I finally decided to start up an army. I'm having trouble deciding which army to play though. My two favorite are Tau and Tyranids. Even though they are completely opposite, both really appeal to me in looks and playstyle.

So, between Tau and Tyranids:
Which would be easier to learn to play well?
Which is easier to paint?
Which is cheaper to get a working army?

Hmmm......both are hard to learn to play. Your first few games (which is from 10 to 20) :P will be losses, expect that. Both have their quirks, strength and weaknesses. I would suggest reading it up. Watch a few games played by Tau and Tyranids.

Easier to paint? Tau, of course. Tyranids, you have to paint loads and loads of them. Also the Tau Armor makes it easier to paint on instead of the Tyranid's rugged armor.

Tau Battleforce will immediately give a 500-point army to play with. The Crisis Suit being your Commander and the Fire Warriors + Devilfish and Kroots making up the 2 Troop choice. Tyranids, you need loads of models to get them legal. So, its cheaper to go with Tau.

Hope this helps

actually the tau and nid boxes are the only legal armies straight from the box =p but to get a decent army you'd probs need to spend more on nids than tau... i just started nids as my second army n tau are my first. both are a challenge to get used to but are very rewarding once you do.

Interesting question...unfortunately short of getting both codex it,s hard to say.

Tyranid:
- They can go Swarm (a metric ton of troops) or more specialist like the Nidzilla army (Max carnefex, Warriors Hive tyrant and ripper)
- They have no vehicule, only infantry...so less rules to learn.
- Might take longer to paint but once you got your basic scheme you just repeat it.
- A 1500 Nidzilla army could be field with maybe 20-30 models

Tau:
- They can go mechanised (vehicule/suit heavy), hybrid or static (many troops and heavy support that don't move).
- They got a lot of nifty rules which give them a slightly steeper learning curve (I had Tau for over a year and still learning stuff)
- Painting could be a bit more tricky, especially if you use auxiliaries
- A workable 1500 army would probably average 50-60 models.

nope warriors can be hq.

and im finding tau easier to paint... woo armour. the other downer to nids is their weapons. they arnt the same for every man so you need to remember a lot more stats with them. both have upgrades that change their stat lines as well. nids have more of these tho. tau tanks are, imo, the best in the game. with their upgrades and the railgun it can handle alomst anything. but the nids have the almighty 'fex.

I suggest you either buy or steal a mates codex n see which one you like more.

Oh, bugger :P No pun intended unless the filter is on Ya, I didn't see the HQ or Elites entry :P Ya, so you can start a legal Tyranid army straight out of the box

But IMHO, Tau would be funner to play with and with many type of vehicles and units to play with. Too bad someone ruined the Greater Good for me otherwise I'll consider starting them myself :P

oh what happened to ruin the greater goodness? n warriors can also be fast attack! which army has a unit that can fielded in 3 diffrent slots!! hehe i'd agree with zenny persionally. but thats cos im biased towards tau. still get your mits on both codices n have a look. r go into GW and see if they got any models for those armies so you can see which you like the look of better n possibly ask for a couple of with them to see which one grabs you more.

I would say it but I think the "people" might flame me :-\ Honestly, Tyranids look too scary but then again, I'm not a bug/monster person. Ya, read through the codex, watched some games with Tau and/or Tyranids in them and maybe you will like to start the fluff etc etc etc.

I think tau is easy to learn. Tau and tyrainds are both easy to paint sort of. Ti really in money depends what kind of army you take. I mean for nids a single monstrous creature costs $45. But tau broadsides can get really expensive quickly the cost $35 each. Also tyranids what style matters. I mean piranha spam can get expensive. I mean tau can be hard to learn I have been playing tau since February 2007 and still cannot use crisis suits really well. I also took a foray into tyranids but I Had major problems with them. They are hard to use but fast. I mean a baatleforce gives you a nice start for the army but its only a start. They also provide a good sampler of the different unit types. Ex the tau has suits fw kroot drones and one vehicle. The tyranid battleforce has 8 gaunts 8 hormaguants 3 warriors 8 genstealer and a carnifex. You do not need to learn much about weapons type. Tau get a lot more vehicle. Thing is it a bit hard to pose the genstealers for beginners. I had a horrible time with it and tau were my first army. Tyranids have armor piecing guns which Can get pretty annoying. but they do have lots of ways to ignore armor in close combat. In the end tau can be easier to play with vehicles being pretty simple once you know which upgrades are important. Tau are hard to learn if the opponent takes a ton of meltaguns If a lot of player take meltaguns it is hard to do tau since they can destroy a lot of our stuff like suits and vehicle's easily. Tyranids are not quite as dead vs meltaguns for example a carnifex can shrug off 3 wounds form a melta and still deal firepower at full strength. So my conclusion is tau if the area is low on meltaguns or tyranids if the are is high on meltaguns.
