Default Real world influences in 40k?

I've been noticing for a while little real world influences in each of the armies. i.e. the eldar's use of the yin yang and Avenger exarch helm closely resembling an ancient egyptian style with the extended chin piece and all, not to mention that little Ra like statue that comes with him. I don't know why GW would use egyptian tones in the eldar, were the egyptians known for elite armies or does it just look cool? I was just wondering what other influences you guys have found around the other armies and why you think those little bits are there and if they relate to the army's particular playstyle.

I'm pretty sure any references were either because they were Bad-Ass or that they were really Bad-Ass.

Pretty much all of GW's stuff has some real world influence there. The Imperium or example, has many Roman influences from latin being the main influence on high gothic to The Aquilla.

Tau are a mix of Japanese Manga and Chinese philosophy, Necrons as well as Egyptian influence have Terminator influences and the whole "Old ones create the universe" idea is nothing new.

Thousand Sons are heavily influenced by the Egyptians, though there are some other less obvious real world references as well, and there are countless other examples.

Generally most references are there because they look cool rather than any factual accuracy.

Now, I thought that the Imperium is closer to Napoleonic France

1) An Eagle as their symbol
2) Napoleon had an "Imperial guard" if I'm not mistaken
3) All the pictures of the Emperor make him look as noble as possible (Napoleon made very regal looking pictures of himself)

Actually, Nazi Germany is even a closer fit:

-Commissars look like SS officers (and behave like them).

-Racial purity, anyone? Purge the mutant, the heretic, the traitor?

-The eagle was actually a symbol used by Nazi Germany as well

And so on, and so on. So, yeah, looking for real-world influences in 40K is like shooting fish in a barrel...

Cheers,
-Bone

Of course there are the stupidly obvious influences (e.g planet Birmingham)

Yeah, I guess thats kinda what I'm saying, but do you guys think that's where the similarities end or were certain types of the particular army's play style made around these historical armies? Maybe I'm looking too much into this.

Didn't I bring this up some time ago?

There are many connections between the Space Marines and American outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Sly Marbo, a Catachan Special Character is basically Rambo. (Sly being a nickname for Sylvester Stallone, and Marbo being Rambo mixed up.)

The different Eldar "Paths" closely resemble the way of the Samurai...

The list goes on.

There is a thread somewhere in this Forum talking about that, Scoutninja.
