Default Tank Hunting Tool

Please vote once for each army you play.

Just wondering what non-tau players do to kill tanks. A devastator squad with 4 las cannon still seem inadequate from Tau perspective, so I wonder.

And that's where you're wrong.

Depends but my 2000pt Dark Angels (SM) list generally includes:
4 lascannons (2 in dev squad, 2 more on a pair of pred Annihilators)
7 Plasma weapons (4 cannons, 3 plasmaguns)
5 Powerfists (every squad sarge)
5 meltabombs (4 sarges 1 on HQ jsut in case)

Think that covers it, best weapons of the lot (most reliable killers) are lacannons and meltabombs for me.

Before any upgrades whatsoever, the probability of a 3 xv88s to kill armor 13 is 23% better than 4 lascannon marines.

30 point for tank hunter assuming that marines can still get it in the next book, and 30 points for targetting array, this gap narrows to 20%.

Can't remember what devastator las cannon is worth, but guessing on the low side, 4 marine bodies and 4 las cannon should be around 200 points? 3 XV88s without upgrades is 210 points? and has 2 more wounds, better armor, better range, better kill%. This is why I feel 4 las-cannons seem inadequate.

Inadequacy is relative. I use Lascannons in Tactical Squads, and have yet to regret it.

I honestly think 4 Lascannon marines is too much for one squad. I have never seen any massed tanks in my local store(or any of my locals ). It's generally a max of 1 or 2 Vehicles, so a few lascannons are more than enough.

Anything else is either an Attack Bike mounted Multi-Melta (which doubles up as a very mobile MC/TEQ hunter). Able to deal with any AV14 (bar the Monolith, grr >) fairly easily. Good for rushing armour.

Heh, I'm Tau and my best tank hunting gear is still only a strength 8 Melta boomstick. (More specifically, a tasty, tasty, Fusion Cannon for my Hammerhead).

Sure, at times I miss what broadsides can do, but the template on that fusion cannon is just too good to pass up.

Far from meaning to decry the tank-slaying capacity of the ubiquitous Lascannon, I do rather favour the Meltagun.

To answer your question, most non-Tau players have the advantage of being able to scatter their long range AT firepower around the table in their troop choices, and that is the means by which some players choose to deal with enemy armour. Comparing the effectiveness of the all-powerful railgun to other weapons of the same nature against an average front armour value is too linear to be of worth. The fact is a static AT gun position such as a Broadside squad is recognised as a particular threat to armour and so measures will be taken to protect against them. But when there are half a dozen lascannons dotted about the table, nestled in infantry squads, there is nowhere for tanks to hide and no way to quickly diminish said firepower. Such lascannon/autocannon/missile launcher proliferation makes side/rear armour shots from half way across the table inevitable.

That said, I rather favour getting up close and personal with my Marines so Meltabomb toting Assault Marines led by a Chaplain are my preferred means of dispensing mayhem.

Welll....

Lets see.

For my Templar I usually have about 3 lascannons, a vindicator, 3 multi-meltas, 3 metlas, 3 twin linked assault cannons, and in times of dire need, I have the Holy Orb of Antioc, which auto-glances.

IG?

Earthshaker, lascannons, and missile launchers.

My prefered Anti-Tank weapon? The Lascannon ^-^ I got at least 4 of them :P I'll be making another 3 so altogether I'll have 9 of them >

Battle Cannon? Well......if there's no other targets other than tanks. I use it mostly on the Infantry; Horde and MEQs
