I know the book has only been out for a few days, but I would like to ask the community - now that the veil is gone, all rumors are buried or exposed. How do you like it now? Love the ground breaking real LOS thing, or hating the skimmer nerf enough to affect your view on the edition as a whole? Note that you can edit your response if you havent read the book, but you do so later. I like most of the changes myself.
I dont want this thread to be a discussion thread. There are loads of other threads for that. However, feel free to comment, and feel free not to comment, as I know several of you already posted up long posts with rants and arguments for and against the changes. If you feel like it, you could requote it here. Otherwise, just cast a vote. My own opinion is something along these lines. PROS: A single armor penetration table is a good thing. Pinning is now just "go to ground", with all the good and bad things that confer, and its a good idea. Real LOS is pretty cool. Wound allocation is pretty cool, as you can be unlucky and lose important equipment/personnel early in the game. Blast weapons are now a LOT more dangerous, with "partial hits" out of the equation. Outflank is a good idea. Ramming is probably pretty fun. Mission system is pretty generic, simple, good. EDIT: added the new BS-system for hitting with blasts. Awesome! CONS: Only troops are scoring, sucks. Close combat is suddenly very WHFB'ish, taking casualties from the back of the unit. Defensive weapons are S4. Ramming is probably not that great. : ![]() So, whats your own ideas on this matter? On my personal pros/cons list, the pros-list is gladly the longer one, so I find the result pretty good. And on another note, I find the layout of the book to be absolutely beautiful. |

My own appraisal of the rules has been brief thus far, but im not openly hating anything just yet. Also, i think it will be a short while before anyone can openly criticise the new rules until they've at least had a fair few games with them under their belt- i've had a few so far, havent come across anything i dont like.
Ahh, true LOS- as someone who started with 40K 2nd Ed., this is a good thing to see it back...

I actually quite like the new rules, but there are one or two things that I feel could have been done better.
5th as a game system I'm still undecided, but closer to a good thing. 5th as a book or piece of art is pretty much excellent.

I say that the pros massivley outweigh the cons.
IMO the CC system isn't that bad (although I wish they had left the outnumber modifiers in). Troops being the only scoring units may suck but it is much more realistic. Defensive weapons is a real blow though. otherwise, its pretty good.

Pros:
1. One Vehicle dmg chart 2. Troops only being scoring (I play orks and the boyz are the backbone and the fist) 3. Real LOS 4. Outflank whats not to like 5. Missions are easyto remember but sum up all the old one into one easy matrix. 6. Stealling the initiative (first turn) 7. Keeping units in Reserve if you wish 8. Wound allocation system has the ability to throw a wrench at you when you're least expecting it. 9. Going to ground works wonder for units like Plague Marines and other FNP units 10. Snipers have rending now 11. Rending not over powered now. 12. All jump infantry have Deepstrike (Ork stormboyz didn;t have Deepstike in 4th) 13. IC can now be targeted with ease if they choose to run solo 14. IC can join unit that have other IC. 15. 2/3 of missions objective based. Cons. 1. Defensive Wpns str 4 2. Gernades and attacking into cover; gernades just don't do all that much for low Intiative armies now) 3. Immobilzed = destroyed for walkers not good for fire support orientated walkers. Overall I think its an excellant system and a much needed over hull to the game. |

Overall, I feel it's acceptable. 5th has the niggly bits sorted out better(special rules like Rending are less godly), but I feel some of the mechanics were better in 4th(LOS mostly).

i have yet to find anything in 5th ed that i think was worse than 4th.
i love the skimmer nerf (though my 3 fire prisms and 6 falcons [apocolypse reasons ] may scream otherwise )i love the hitting rear armour (means i have to actually protect my tanks) the line of sight rules i like but i have already seen the local players trying to break my "nothing is beardy" opinion (one of the GW staff was shooting through the front of an ork trukk - literally through the "windscreen" - to hit squads that were behind :shifty: ) but i'm loving 5th ed - even though out of the 4 games i've played, i only won a single game 8) |

I'm uncertain so far. From what I've seen there are things that I'll love and there are things that seem downright silly to me.
Pro -No more entangled -Sillyness with ICs and reserves sorted out -The sarge isn't always the last one to die due to new casualty removal rules -Skimmers got toned down. -Running Con -Str 4 defensive weapons revert non fast vehicles to 3rd edition status -Potential for arguments caused by TLOS -KILL POINTS. This is probably the biggest problem I have with the new rules. A puny squad of guardsmen should not be worth as much as a termie squad for determining the winner of games.

wow, so as far as i can tell there has not yet been any ranting and carrying on yet. Was expecting some people to get on and give it the whole>
"GW has once again proven itself to be a monopolistic blah blah blah, my friends and i wont play this version blah blah blah, i am an elite-ist weirdo blah blah blah...." Refreshing to say the least!! Had a small 500pt game last night to try a few more of the new rules, im loving TLOS so much... oh yes...
