Default First battle under 5th edition rules

Although the 5th edition rulebook is not available for sale quite yet, my local store has a not-for-sale copy, and a couple of us tried it out. It was 1500 points, annihilation (1 point for every unit or IC killed), my tau vs his orcs.

First impressions, the good:

Marker drones and can jump-shoot-jump when attached to crisis or stealth teams. Infiltrators like kroot can "outflank" and come in from reserves on a short table edge. The Run option can help rapid-fire units (like kroot once again) get back into the action more quickly.

First impressions, the bad:

Skimmers get severely beaten with the nerf bat (unless our acting rules expert got it wrong, skimmers only get the cover save from moving if they're going Flat Out and can't shoot). With multi-tracker and disruption pod they're still ok, just not nearly as powerful as before. Terrain rules, which I don't completely understand yet, require a lot of bending over to get "models-eye-view." With models-eye-view, tall models like tanks or crisis suits will always have LOS on most other models, who will of course have LOS on them.

Overall, it's not too bad. I'll miss the devilfish / hammerhead / skyrays moving 12 inches, firing everything and being immune to penetrating hits, but I guess it needed to happen. Run is very cool, and it doesn't make the orcs any worse than they were. Markerlights' ability to remove cover saves is going to be much more useful than before because things that were previously out of sight are now shootable but with cover saves. JSJ markerlights have a lot of potential, although it's easy to spend too much on marker drones. Wounds are applied before rolling saves, so it's harder to protect a particular model in the squad. This will hurt battlesuit teams with shield drones, but also Marine and Guard heavy weapon squads.

Hurt? Sounds like they'll be completely useless, their whole job is to prevent those wounds from hitting your suits and the other guy can just ignore them altogether? :-\

Now, now, they cant be ignored altogether...you just have to be careful about leaving the suit in LOS and the drone out.

Wounds being applied before saves isnt all that bad, really, and I assure you, having a drone is still far better than not.

As to what I've heard from first hand players of the game, its the "real LOS" and running that most drastically changes the game. Both features I look forward to.

The rest, nerfs, small changes and all that, no matter. This real LOS is sorta interesting.

I played a game just yesterday (IG v.s Nids) and we used the new rule for friendlys blocking line of sight since the only one we knew was certain.

It didn't really change that much. I had to maneuver my men a bit more, but generally most of their guns could be brought to bear.

"Right, and now to apply wounds - three boltgun hits on your drones, and the lascannon is on your broadside. Now roll to save the drones - wait, the BS is dead, so are all of them" :

This is exactly the retardedness shield drones were designed to stop. Someone up there needs to be kerbstomped :

Ok, seriously, I'm still keeping an open mind, but its likely the kind of open mind that plays fantasy :

isn't it the player taking the armor saves that gets to distribute the wounds?

Not unless the Eldar have an obscure Warrior Aspect that revolves around the complete mastery of the common light bulb.

Yes, unless there is something new in the rules where the shooting player gets to determine where the wounds go. However, I haven't heard of that being the case.

Hopefully drones will get an "intercept the shot" rule to prevent this kind of thing

So defensive weapons aren't down to S4? Right? Because my friend *cough* insists that they are because of a rumor. This is not true right? As I told him only an idiot would do that... (heh... heh...)

Sorry if I should wait to start asking questions about rules that are still unofficial...
