Default Why are the Imperial Armour books from Forgeworld so expensive

I mean come on... 100 bucks for a book? Seriously? I understand this is a niche market but honestly 100 bucks for a book is rather insane I must say. Anyways, anyone have a great justification for the price and/or a place to get them at say... 1/2 that price (legally is better than illegally) or has some hair brained scheme to get them cheaper (Not seriously but just for fun) I'm all ears

people buy them....thats why...

like some of us when we buy directly from gw. We complain, but unless we find another route, we buy models that are hugely overpriced.

Welcome to the forums!

We tend to be spoiled by economy of scale with respect to most books. Anything you pick up in Barnes and Noble or Borders will be part of a massive nationwide run of hundreds of thousands if not millions of copies.

With Forge World, you have a very limited run, so they inevitably cost more. You see the same thing with a lot of science textbooks. Some of them are just ripping off the students, but most of the books I buy for work are well over a hundred dollars new.

Its because they can, GW gives away all the rulebooks for free in japan because over there they are used to quality.

In order to get more people to play in Japan they give away codex's, and last I heard, rulebooks as well.

(imagine a smaller paperback rulebook, because GW is cheap)

I believe they are even available on the website as PDFs. The idea of buying a rulebook is ridiculous in Japan, so they would have no customers.

Also, Forge World Imperial Armour books are really gorgeous. Maybe not as gorgeous as the pricetag, but still: those are some sexy books and comparable ones for real-world armour/campaign series run the same price. My dad's always collected books about armies and armour (he was Special Forces, Green Beret, Ranger) and they're always an arm and a leg for the quality ones.

Honestly, I thought that the IA books were priced rather outrageously at first. And I mean even for a GW product . But, to be honest, I feel a lil better about their prices now that I've seen them. Yeah, it's still overpriced, but then again so is pretty much everything we buy for this hobby. After seeing the sheer content of some of these books I regard their prices as really being about status quo for what we expect from a GW product. IA 1 and 2 have a simply demented number of units in them, and in the case of IA1 what is essentially a full codex.

Another thing to note is that the later IA books that focus on a particular campaign are priced somewhat lower as these often do not contain the sheer number of units that the earlier volumes do. Now, to make up for it, they contain fluff by the bucket load, which I would say is about as good as the rulesy stuff anyway. Of course, the FW people probably know that people like me aren't the majority, so they set the price lower.

The point is that you're actually getting some damn nice books out of the deal so to me that doesn't really make them any more overpriced than your standard issue GW stuff

I agree with Khanaris and Fish Ead - those books are well worth the price.

Don`t forget that we aren`t talking about mass-produced paperbacks here. We`re taking about hardcover, first-quality paper books with enormous amounts of pictures, loads of color pages, and so on.

Trust me, as soon as you had one in your hands, the price tag doesn´t seem as intimidating.

To reinforce what Khanaris said: Some of the books for "specialists" are very expensive - certainlaw books cost around 100 bucks as well, and they DON`T have nicely done color pages...

Cheers,
-Bone
