Default Reserve Rules

OK, I'm not a hard core gamer and everything so please don't get annoyed at my ignorance.

After a fight with fellow gamer of mine about the limitations one has to follow when one enters the board using the reserve rules (none deep strike), I decided to check it up in the Rule Book. After a lot of time spent searching for the reserve rules I couldn't find what I was looking for (the rules that talk about units entering the board and what they can do that turn were too vague to my taste and too open to interpretation).

So I have decided to ask for help from experienced gamers about what rules ones units have to follow when they enter the board after being kept in reserve (not through deep strike). Can one move, shoot, assault, etc normally? Or do you have to follow the deep strike rule of not moving but being able to shoot (but counting as have moved)? ??? Please enlighten me.

I could be wrong on this, but since Reserves are done before movement, you get your normal movement, shooting, and assaulting once you enter on.

Yeah that's wrong..

You roll for them before you move anything, then you move them onto the board up to as far as they are allowed to move, so normal infantry six inches, jump infantry twelve inches etc

They count as moving the distance they moved onto the board for firing purposes, so you can't fire heavy weapons for example (because you moved, otherwise you can assault and shoot normally

Note that you don't place them on the board at the edge and then move them, which steals inches equal to the base size. I've seen an Ork player try to pull that with a 9" battlewagon.

Do you always have to move once the unit appears have entered? Or can you just leave them on the table edge? If so, do they count as having moved?

You can leave them on the board edge, but they still count as moving, as they have "moved onto" the board.

Also more dangerous morale wise. One failed test and they are gone, even if they are marines.

Just to clarify this and make it totally clear.

Roll for reserves.

Any reserves that arrive MUST come onto the board.

They move onto the board. They are not placed on the board before moving, this means all models coming in from reserve must move at least 1" since this is the smallest base size.

After arriving they may act as normal, though obviously since they moved onto the board they do indeed count as moving. They may shoot and may assault if allowed. I.e. they didn't fire rapid fire weapons ect.

Additionally a neat thing to remember is that in most scenarios your board edge is actually THREE edges.

You have the back of the table edge which you deploy on, but for example in a Secure and Control mission, you deploy 12" onto the board. Those two 12" sections of bordering your deployment zone are part of your table edge and reserves can move on from them! This is an excellent way to get slow moving units into a more advanced flanking position later in the game.

on that note i was wondering if its ok if a player rolls a reserves roll for lets say space marines since the player put them in deepstrike, then he passes the roll, and declares they are comming off of a board edge, is that legit?

off topic a little, falstead, you avatar is awesome.

I don't think thats a problem, although it depends on the arrival. If they are just like jumpers, then I think its fine, but if they are drop podding, I think they have to drop pod in.

If it's a game where both deep strike AND escalation are in effect, the player may choose which option a unit capable of DSing uses.

Of course, if only one is legal, then he's gotta stick with that.
