Default Kill Teams

I generally don't play a lot of 40k. I have some codex's (codices?) but I might play a game two to five times a year, max. I mostly just play for the hobby - and, with that, I am here to present a question.

What is a kill team?

Sure, I've heard about them. From my hobby point of view, I know what they are. I know that you'd model them as a small, elite, specialist squad with lots of cool tidbits and conversions. But what are they, really, when you play with them?

Would you play a game of Kill Team vs. Kill Team? Kill Team vs. Army? Kill Team trying to complete objective while army is trying to destroy it? Do you make up the rules for your specialist units or just use the standard ones? Where can I find any rules for it?
I'm curious mostly because I have a lot of fun making and modelling one, but actually want to know what I can do with it on the field and whether my friend and I can each make one, and play with them (with or without a standard army or standard 40k 'rules&#39

1shot1kill,

The most basic "use"f a kill-team is the game by the same name on page 214 of the 40k Core Rule Book. It's sort of like a commando raid into enemy territory.
I have also been to several places that allow the use of a kill team that follows all of the mutable rules to be used as an Elites Choice, and one that breaks immutable rules to be used as an HQ choice in regular 40k and/or apocalypse. This is with opponent's permission only. (of course!)

Thats all I've got,
Ged

It's a mini-scale game of 40k with special restrictions: the attacker - the Killteam - can only have 12 models and there are a lot of restrictions (the aforementioned Mutable and Immutable Rules) and the defender - the Brutes - are limited to premade squads plus a boss.

It looks like a whole keg of fun, but I've not had the joy of playing one yet. I look forward to it, though - it's one of the places I have heard that Vespid and Kroot shine like sparkley unicorns of joy.

Heh, try it with a fully pimped-out space marine veteran squad. You might only get five models but those five are all you need...

Thanks - I only have the Battle For Macragge rulebook, however, and I don't see that it mentions it anywhere? (It's not in the index, at least).

Because all the cool rules, background and hobby sections are only the BGB.
The Big, Hardcover rulebook.

Awww...
Well, I'm not shelling out $60 for that thing, so bye-bye kill teams.

Alright, let`s NOT have a discussion about the Rulebook again...

I agree that the Artwork might not be perfect in places (John Blanche... >...), but the content of the book is definitely worth it - loads of scenarios, hobby tipps, fluff, additional rules (campaign suggestions, Kill Team,..), and so forth.

I definitely don`t regret the money I`ve spent on it, and I will buy the 5th Edition Rulebook in Hardcover, as well. Itīs really a matter of personal preference, but for getting acquainted with the universe, the Big Book is definitely a good start.
Cheers,
-Bone

Totally agree... I had the MacCragge rulebook and upped and bought the BFRB (think D00M's "BFG", people) and I am really pleased that I did, there's a LOT in there that's very very cool and useful.

And as for the Space Morons - you can take as many as 12. The size restriction is for BRUTE SQUADS ONLY. The Killteam is the one you pimp, that and the Brute player's Leader. It's all about your elite Killteam, 12 models of über joy. Brute SQUADS are vanilla, so your Space Marines would just be basic models. You'd just get more squads depending on scenario, defensive upgrades and the number of alarums your enemy set off.

You could pimp out your Brute Boss - one unit in a single Brute squad is upgraded, but it depends on how much you have to spend (you start with a set amount and then get more for every Mutable Rule your opponent breaks, which can be spent on the Brute Boss or on Defensive Upgrades like "more brute squads" and the like).

Incidentally, for the Tau, that's where Vespid shine... Kroot or Vespid are your best bets, it depends on the scenario's details.
