Default Deep striking

At a tournament someone informed me that when you deep strike the unit cannot be placed within 12" of an enemy unit. I've tried to find this in the rule book, but I can't seem to, can someone give my a page # please?

If it makes any difference I was deepstriking my Lictor near a unit a Space wolves, so perhaps they have some special rule?

Well, no, no such rule exists.

Apparently, your opponent was mixing up deepstriking with deploying infiltrating troops.

Deepstriking next to enemy units is possible, but it is highly dangerous, as well - if you land on them (or in them, in the case of teleportation), the deep striking unit is history.

Cheers,
-Bone

PS: From my time as a SW player, I can not recall any special Space-Wolves rule which would forbid it, either, and I doubt something like this would exist, anyway )

infiltration, can infiltrate within 12 inches if out of line of sight and 18 if in the open i believe.
speaking of deep striking, is it possible to deep strike an entire tau army (loading infantry into a devilfish)?

a devilfish can only deepstrike in case something goes horribly wrong... maybe the sensors of the manta are screwed and it goes something like this:

(still in the atmosphere...)

Pilot:
+ok mounted squad alpha, you are ready to deploy. we are currently hovering 10 metres above the ground+

+understood, sir! for the greater GOOOOOD +

Pilot (looks out of the window...):
+oh, whooops...+

but no sane person deepstrikes their units closer than 7 inches to an enemy unit, unless the situation indeed is very desperate... or they happen to have drop pods...
your opponent was mistaken.

Rules-wise, Devilfish cannot deepstrike. There is some discussion about them being used in low-altitude insertions (i.e. dropped from a hovering Manta) but no deep-striking. It is, of course, entirely possible to have your entire army start off the table, but only when the escalation rules are in effect.

The large blast template for deepstriking can be placed anywhere. However, I think any models that can't be deployed at least 1" from enemy models or impassable terrain are destroyed. Infiltrators can be deployed anywhere at least 12" away from enemy units if no unit can draw a line of sight to them, or 18" away from enemy units if a line of sight can be drawn.

Older does not always equal smater.

But yeah, as has been mentioned, you can place your deepstrikers anywhere on the board with the two following exceptions

1 - They cannot be placed within 1" of an enemy model.
2 - They cannot be placed in impassable terrain. (Space occupied by friendly models count as impassable terrain!)

Otherwise the whole table is fair game.

However keep in mind, when you deep strike you have a 2/3rds chance of scattering, and the average scatter distance is 7".

Get a 4th edition rule book Dan. You don't use a template when deep striking. You place one model from the squad, scatter him, and then deploy the rest of the squad around him in a series of concentric rings.
