Default Lost interest - Help me get it back! (plus rant)

Folks, I'd thought it'd never come to this, but I have finally lost interest in my poor, Blood Red with silver bits Tau. It seems that I've spent so much money on paint and glue for what - plastic cluttering up the garage? Hah. It seemed no matter how much I spent, no matter how much I dreamed, my army would never get bigger, and that all I'd do is play Bioshock and Halo 3 and leave them in the dirt.

Naturally, I don't want my plucky blueskins going to the tip, so I need you guys to give me a reason to continue with my hobby, and get through the tedium of painting and suchlike. I really, really want to keep going with this hobby, but can neither find the people to play with, nor the effort to continue. Please. Reach out to me. Make me your brother. ;D

Oh, and I've also noticed people make snide comments about GW is inferior to other companies, lazy, bad at writing rules, etc. If this is so true, why do you collect the bloody things? Do what I was going to do and chuck the goddamn plastic away, then, if you don't like it. But I forgot, you're not going to waste money, so you'll keep buying the stupid things, and you'll keep moaning about "inferior" GW and keep going forever. If you don't enjoy the hobby, don't collect it, don't paint and write about it, and don't post on a forum dedicated to the hobby. If and when GW goes down, I'd rather you'd point and laugh from a different forum than having to read said laughing here.

[/rant] Sorry about that. Now, back to getting my mojo back.

Well, I was looking at your profile, (creepy, I know,) and I noticed your age. I purposely didn't start Warhammer until I had my license, since there is only 1 other person in my home town who plays. Trust me, once you can drive, you'll be surprised how many opportunities you'll have to play.
I myself almost lost my mojo once. Here's what I did to get it back:
1. Took a small break from painting and gluing
2. Tried new techniques with my painting. (Different shading styles, paint schemes, etc.) Once I got off the assembly line painting, I enjoyed it a lot more! Consequently, I am also one of the better painters in my area. Just try to enjoy every model by adding new things, and only painting when you feel like it.
3. Once you have access to a hobby shop that puts on WH40K events, you'll realize all the work was worth it!
4. Get into the fluff. It makes each game a unique story.
5. I found Dawn of War helped spark my interest again. With the proper mod, DoW is a nice snack between tabletop matches.
6. I started two new armies, so I'm not painting the same communistic aliens every time I sit down with a brush! It also gives me an opportunity to play myself, which can be mildly entertaining if you're desperate to put those models to good use.
7. Think how much cash you spent on the zoggin' things! Whatever you do, don't trash 'em! You probably can make some decent money back selling them on Ebay, if you must.

Agreed, I myself have lost my "mojo" as I was just graduating from high school. I havent played an actual game in almost 3-4 years, but I keep buying the bloody models and rule books. I can proudly say that I have most of my mojo back, and that was all thanks to the Rosen Knights project. Not only will I now have a full army to feild, I'll have an entire battle company (120 marines for me) of Black Templars to feild

Being able to drive is always a god send when it comes to this game. If I didn't drive, I probably never would have made it to half of the events that I participated in back in high school. Just keep pluggin away. Try and refrain from buying new models and just slowly paint your models. The next thing you know you'll have them fully painted and on the table in no time

Sadly GW is mostly a social hobby. If you can't set that up then you probably won't have anything to enjoy but the modeling aspect, and from the appearance of it you don't really enjoy the hobby aspect that much. So while I hate to say it, there may be no reason to keep up the hobby at this time, just pack your stuff away and hope that you eventually run into someone that does play. Thats what happened to me in High school. I started playing in middle school, but when I went to HS I knew no one that played so all my 40k stuff went on hiatus. It wasen't until my last year of HS that I actually found people who were interested in the hobby and form then on we've been gaming.

: So unless we pay GWs abhorrent prices and/or adore them like crazed fanboys we don't deserve to play with GWs products? Thats a rather elitest outlook on things if I do say so myself. Criticism is not a bad thing, unless you ignore it, and while their's a lot of things to praise about GW, their's also a lot to criticize them on too.

Ach, if you feel you need another reason, youre in trouble. The reason is that you do it because you find it fun. If you dont find it fun, dont do it.

However:

Personally I found it fun when I was 15. Then I quit it at 18. I got back up with it between age 21-22. Then I didnt give a damn for some years. Now it hit me again. I'm 26, and I enjoy it. Again. Painting is like mental therapy for me, its just utter focus and practice, creativity and complete concentration. In a stressed world I like this aspect of it. I enjoy the gaming too, and I have a friend I play the games with.

Warhammer can last a few years in a box in the closet, and then be enjoyed later. There is no reason forcing it, just refrain from buying new stuff until youre positive you'll be happy with it.

Other than that, have you considered finding a gaming community so you can actually get to play a few games?

40K as a game does not really interest me much anymore. 40K as a universe is brilliant, Gothic and Epic remain some of my favourite games, Gorkamorka is genius, and Necromunda also enjoyable. Inquisitor is a laugh, and I want Dark Heresy so badly I will quite happily sell your mother to get it.

But 40K? It's getting hard to imagine how GW can screw it up more than they have, yet 5th Edition is coming...

In short, I cannot convince you to play 40K. However, I will say this; if you have never experienced Warhammer Fantasy (which itself, I fear, is going the way of 40K now...), or the Specialist Games, go have a look. Specialist Games rules are all free to download off their official site, so just proxy up some sides, read the rules, and play a few test games. You will not regret it.

I would agree with most of the comments so far. I've been in and out of the hobby a number of times and at present I am firmly ensconced! The main reason for this is being a member of a local gaming club. It's my outlet for the social aspect of the hobby that before I could only express by visiting my local GW store (which quickly gets old). Without this the hobby would have less meaning.

Being able to drive is what makes this possible...

I do have a rather elitist opinion on things, it's true. However, I'd seen a snarky comment about the quality of GW's writing from Crazed Mongoose, and I got angry - I do anger easily. I agree that GW can improve in areas *coughNecronsandDarkEldarcough*, but I enjoy their universe and their game far too much and overlook these areas. I apologise for any offence, but not for the opinion - I don't like people being snide about a product on a fansite for that product.

To all others, thanks for the advice, especially Wargamer - I've had my eye on Battlefleet Gothic, and I've got a very small force of Lizardmen in a box somewhere. I hope I return to this hobby and get more involved.

To be honest, I think the game is a bit rubbish, but I love the modelling. It got to a point where I was quite frankly bored with painting my Marines, so I switched over to Daemonhunters, new models, new paints, new techniques, and it's become a lot more fun.

I'm not driving yet, and I probably won't do much Warhammer stuff when I do, but it's fun.
