I'd say they are different enough that you do need one. However the 5th Edition is expected to be out late this summer or early fall. So maybe wait for that one.

Or just get a Battle for Macragge Booklet. They are in the BfM boxed sets, and I guess you could sell the Marines and the nids off.

Besides, this way, you get all the templates, rulers, and a couple of dice.

Cheers,
-Bone

The booklets are also on Ebay all the time.

But the problem with those booklets is that they don't contain all the rules.
Sure, they contain the core rules required for play, but they don't include any of the fun stuff the bigger, hardback book does:
Combat Patrol Rules
Kill-Team Rules
Alternate Missions
Some Terrain and Battlefield ideas
Running a Campaign/Experience
A rather large section dedicated to explaining the background of the 40k universe

So, uh, yeh, that's why I go for the larger rulebook, because it does actually contain more.
It's also a lot better for walloping stupid people with. :P

The little book is much handier though.

I agree with that.
The little book is excellent for when you need a quick reference and what not.
The larger book is good for campaigns and playing the other gametypes at the club though.

I skipped the fourth ed rulebook. Honestly, if you knew the basics, it's not hard to learn the changes(rapid fire, etc). Especially with fifth ed coming out soon, I wouldn't be in a rush to go buy it.

Buy models for now, and buy a new rulebook when it comes out. If you want, the mini rulebook has all the important stuff, and is available on ebay/bits places for cheap.
