Default Question regarding limited sight range

Im sorry this has probably been asked before but I dont know where to find the answer..

squads with abilities to conceal themselves, like stealth teams or harlequins with the veil... if someone can spot one of them, do they spot the whole unit? Or do you have to range out how many models are actually spotted?

logicaly, if you know that someone is there, you would think all of them are there and just fire away until it all stops moving... but on a very game-mechanics level how is this applied?

We've always played that if you can spot one, then that means you can shoot the whole unit.

No it's the opposite, they can only see the distance they rolled.

just treat it as if it were a ne max range (unless of course the max range of the weapon is smaller than the distance rolled) because of this casualties may only be taken from the ones that can be seen.

Well say you got a stealth suit team that you are trying to spot. the closest model is at 17" from you, 3 are at 18", and the furthest is at 19"

You roll to spot and get an 18. You shoot at the whole unit, but you cannot wound the model who is at 19" because he's technically beyond your shooting range (determined by your perception roll).

I have to side with Scoutfox. If a shooting model can see one unit in the stealthed squad then he can hit any of them that his weapon could normally reach. If only the front models from the shooting unit can see, then I think only they can fire. They can still hit any enemy models in weapon range.

Boneguard has it right, in that the spotting distance you rooled becomes that unit/models max range unless the weapon's range is less.

Well he can remove them from the back yes. so in my exemple he could remove the one which is at 19".

The nuance here is that since he can only see 4 out of 5 models, he can only at the most, cause 4 casualties, not 5.

Edit:
Because as pointed out by yawgomoth, with stealth unit you apply 'Night Fighting' rules which supercedes regular shooting rules.

He cannot wound the furthest model! Its just as with normal shooting!

A model is out of range. No kill. This can be used for your advantage. Place your unit so only the teamleader can be killed.

I did not say he can wound him, just said that he could remove it. Slight difference.

Once a unit suffers a certain number of casualty (in the case of my exemple the maximum casualty possible would be 4), you can remove any models from the unit...even those out of range IIRC (granted this would be stupid but possible).
