Default movement through buildings?

hello anybody ;D

my friend and i almost always have some buildings on the battlefield, but i'm not sure about his movement rules. he says units can move and assault freely through buildings, because they're imperial and are full of big gothic-looking windows. i play tau, so this is a major disadvantage for me. i just wanted to find out what other people think (or know) about movement through buildings
by the way, yes, i searched it and i couldn't find anything

thanks

I usually class them as area terrain as our buildings are on large square bases filled with rubble and such.

It depends, in CoD you can move and assault through any part of the building. But when not using CoD style setups we only allow entry through doors, windows, and broken walls - which depending on how you built your ruins could mean they get to assault everywhere anyway.

If it's not area terrain, usually meaning a building that's intact and not destroyed, then it would be WYSIWYG. So, if it has windows then models can move through them, or doorways, etc.

As long as he is rolling Difficult Terrain test, I don't see a problem with it.

Not all buildings are area-terrain, and so you don't need to roll difficult terrain if it's not. Destroyed buildings are treated as area-terrain and thus you roll for movement, but if it's not a destroyed building then it's just normal terrain.

I always thought the Difficult terrain test represented them taking time to smash and climb through windows and kick down (or lockpick) doors when dealing with (fairly) intact buildings.

thanks for the answers ;D

most of our buildings are just boxes with windows drawn on the sides to represent the second and/or third story, so there are never any ruins.
also, could someone remind me what area terrain means?
also, should a difficult terrain test also be taken for assaulting through buildings?

1. If that's is what your buildings are like then they are intact, going by CoD you should not move through them but can stand on the top.
2. Area terrain is covered in the rulebook page 17.
3. this is covered on page 38 of the rulebook under terrain effects, the answer is yes.

How terrain affects gameplay should be discussed before the battle. I have played buildings in two different ways.

1). The entire border, and everything inside the terrain edge counts as area terrain and is difficult terrain to move through.

2). Just the edges of terrain are considered difficult terrain, but otherwise the building is treated as area terrain. So, you make a difficult terrain test when you enter/exit the building, but not while you are inside.

Really it is up to you.
