Default Need to help a friend pick an army

Okay he has gotten it to SM or IG.
He likes the models for both troops as much as one another.
He loves the terminator models and the tanks for IG.
He loves how the SM are good shock troops (rhino + plasmas, etc) and loves the ordnance and dakka of the guard. But he does not know what go for. Basically should he consider the models first or the game play?
What army do you think also?

I always go with the models first... If you don't like the look of your army, you're not going to want to paint and play it as much...

Play style is important as well, but in this case, Guard have both the shooty Dakka, and the shock troop capabilities, they just aren't as survivable.

If he plays Inquisition he can alternate using inducted guard and inducted space marines

Unfortunately, you don't get to use terminators that way...
So it's really going to come down to your friend making a choice... so all you need to do is make fun of him until he chooses IG. >

barring that, since he likes the models for both ranges, refine to play-style.

Tell him IG means buying more models.

(i am on a recruiting drive )

but anyway, i have a saying that most people have come to appreciate:

that sounds stupid when you first hear it but it has a meaning. if you have spent long enough modeling/painting/basing your army that it looks awesome, you will be proud of them and will want to use them well. not to mention you will probably have loads of games whilst you are getting the models painted.

to sum up that ramble, pick the army you like the look of. you need to be happy to build, paint and play with it.

I'd agree here =) You can probably fulfill most of the points by taking a Grey Knight army with either Inducted Guard or Inducted Space Marines.

Grey Knight Terminators are by far my favourite models in the entire 40k range, and thus I like them a lot more than the standard Space Marine Terminators. Grey Knights in Power Armour are a little different from your standard Space Marines, but they're still marines. Then you can take squads such as Inquisitorial Storm Troopers, and you can put them in Rhino's.

Then with an Inquisitorial army, you have the additional choice of including extra elements from Guard or Marines, ranging from Infantry Squads (i.e. more dakka), some Tank Options, Sentinels etc - to Space Marine squads and more Space marine Tanks (Grey Knights already have access to some - though you can take Grey Knights if you induct Space Marines).

Once I get my Tau done, I'll be working on a Grey Knight army with Inducted Imperial Guard - purely to include most of my favourite models from the 40k Range in one army. This one is for looks, though that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work well in a game.

I'd say that looks are most important. When I was going to pick an army to play, I wound up deciding against Chaos because they look to spiky for me. If you love the look of the models, then you spend more time on them, and become much more involved in the game. I started DH allies for my guard just as an excuse to get my Inquisitor, and I always get a kick whenever he manages to kill something. Plus, both armies can play in similar styles, they will just need different strategies to do it.

I agree, looks are most important. I played Tau, and they were pretty cool and all, and guard, which I like even more, but when I started Warhammer, I just went to a miniature gallary and clicked until I found cool looking models, then found out which army that was. I love my new men at arms, and can actually imagine painting them quickly yet effectivley and reliably.

Looks come first in my book. Rules change, models don't. And it's much funnier, IMO to appreciate a well painted army rather then a well build army list.

Yeah, models first. That's what pulled me into 40k to begin with. (I just wish I didn't suck at painting! :'()
