Default New scenario - Caught in the Act

Brother-Captain Sabathus sneered with contempt at the alien weapon in his hands. It was, in his eyes, a repulsive creation, a blasphemous thing that was unworthy of his touch. However, the Inquisitor had been most insistant; xenotech had to be recovered for study.
"This is Beta Team to Sabathus, come in."
"Sabathus here, Brother-Sergeant. What is your situation?"
"We have recovered the last of the xenotech, but we fear our presence is known. Brother Novar disabled the Tau detection grid, but we will not have long."
"Understood. All units rendevous at Nav Sigma, and prepare for withdrawl."
As the captain turned, the door behind him burst open. Acting on instinct, he swung up the Burst Cannon, and let fly with a torrent of energy shots. The three Firewarriors buckled under the deluge, and collapsed into smoking, bloodied corpses.
Sabathus smiled. Maybe this weapon wasn't so bad after all.
"

Overview:
A Deathwatch Kill-Team has been dispatched to recover Tau artefacts. As they prepared to withdraw, they were detected, and a Hunter Cadre deployed to prevent their escape. The Deathwatch must fight their way clear of the Tau, and evacuate with their xenotech samples.

Forces:
This army is fought between Deathwatch Space Marines and Tau. For this battle, a Kill-Team is led by a Brother-Sergeant (use Veteran Space Marine rules listed in the Kill-Team entry). A Deathwatch Kill-Team led in this way is a Troop Choice. Kill-Teams led by a Captain or Librarian are a HQ choice. Finally, you may take a Kill-Team Captain or Librarain as a HQ choice on their own, making them an independent Character. If the army is led by a Captain, he may purchase the Rites of Battle ability for +15pts.

The Tau army is chosen as normal, save for the alterations below.

Scenario Special Rules:

Looted Xenotech: The Deathwatch have stolen countless Tau artefacts for study, some of which are servicable in battle.

Any Captain, Librarian or Sergeant model may purchase a single Battlesuit Weapon from the Tau Armoury. In addition, up to two Marines per squad may purchase a single Battlesuit weapon in place of the squad's normal special weapons. Note that you cannot mix Tau and Imperial special weapons (ie: you can't take an Imperial Plasmagun and a Tau Burst Cannon in the same squad).

Finally, any Kill-Team may purchase a Devilfish as its Transport.

Caught Off Guard: Because of the sudden nature of the attack, no Tau unit may Deep Strike. In addition, any unit mounted in a Devilfish (except Pathfinders), starts in Reserve.

Deployment Zone:
Both sides deploy within 12" of their board edge. Neither side may Deep Strike.

Victory Conditions:
Play for six turns. Determine the winner by using Victory Points.
In addition, the Tau player earns +10 Victory Points for each model killed that was using Tau tech, and +20pts for each destroyed Looted Devilfish.

Scenario Variants:
Enclosed are a few other ways to play this scenario...

Firstly, you can try changing the sides involved. Perhaps you could field an Eldar army led by Yriel, representing the Eldritch Raiders pillaging a Tau outpost, or send the Deathwatch to recover Necron technology.

Some other interesting ways to play might be a Chaos vs Chaos affair, with a Nurgle warband sent to steal valuable Tzeenchian artefacts!

If you feel one side or another is struggling, perhaps alter the game parameters. Increasing the points earned by Tau for stopping "looters" will make it easier for them to win, whilst giving the Deathwatch side heavier firepower (such as Rail Rifles, Markerlights or even allowing Looted Hammerheads!) will give them a tougher edge.

If you have plenty of players on hand, why not make it a grand multi-way brawl? Whilst the Deathwatch are running with the goods, Eldar and Ork Pirates descend to take their share! You might also want to include four "Raider" armies, and allow armies to loot each other's dead, granting bonus Victory Points for each model a player controls carrying a piece of Xenotech.

Finally, rules such as Night Fight or Dusk & Dawn can help give the battle the feel of a covert raid.

Yes, which he has represented in the rules quite well.

Nice scenario, Wargamer. Might have to try it once I make that Deathwatch Kill-Team I've been dreaming of.

Just curious as to how a marine fits into a devilfish pilot seat?

Same way they all fit into the Rhino; each Marine carries a portable shrinking device. :P

I was thinking of the fluff... The rules are great but it was just that the fluff said the sergant was "uncomfortable" carrying it. It just didnt make sense to me by the fluff ive read...

Each and every Marine is different, much like the Ordo as a whole. Some think the Alien must be purged ruthlessly wherever they are encountered, whereas others will happily use Xenos mercenaries, or recovered Xenotech to help accomplish their goals.

Now that is cool. Very tempted to try this tonight if I wasn't facing those betraying, snooty Asur with my tree huggers.

Added some ideas for ways to modify this scenario for other forces.
