...versatile piece of terrain?

When you guys play your games, what generic piece is always included on your table? This question could be broadened to ask what generic terrain piece would you be most likely to purchase?

Just wondering.

Thanks.

The Hill!

Hills play a big role in Fantasy as well as 40k; in our local club, you can't play Fantasy without at least three hills. If you do, you're not playing a proper game!

Hills are also good in 40K; you can hide things behind them, you can put things on top of them, and you can spend three hours arguing with your opponent who claims that he can shoot your Griffon Mortar because he can see the tip of a crewman's vox aerial.

I find forests are pretty good terrain pieces I am never without. They block LOS and provide cover for units inside. I have actually bought trees, so yeah...

Ruins!

Good coversave, can be used as area terrain if you scatter a few rocks, can be used in desert, ash, city, jungle and ice. Also ruins have elevations.

The problem with hills is that they usually have one colour, and can't be used in urban board.

Forests. I use Kroot.

Even in my Eldar army.

Onward, onward into yonder trees, ye mercantile space chickens!

Dvd cases. Stack them on top of each other for buildings, put some under a cloth for hills, etc, the only thing they can't be are trees. :P

i go 2 steps further than this:

i have DVD cases as size 2 terrain

Video cases as size 3

and paint pots as size 1(walls/etc)

my battlefields are usually quite colourful

Buildings! I'm a huge fan of the old partially ruined building look. Ours are just the right size for using in fantasy games as well, fitting a whole base comfortably. The Fantasy building rules are pretty cool, and for 40k LOS blocking bricks are the things of which battlefields are made.

I'm going to second this one. Ruins can be like every type of terrain rolled into one. And they don't suffer from the scale problems that most gaming hills do.
