Okay, yet another chance for you people to influence my modelling.

I have so far based armies with:

Standard, rubbishy flock.
Static grass for a field type look.
Scorched grass mixed with some wet effect and brown for a marshland effect.
Black sand for my Tau army (their Sept home world is a desert full of black sand)

As far as I see, my options for my next army are:
City rubble - not so keen on that though
Snow
Desert
Lava

What should I go with?

Crikey! This crazy clown causes commotion like the coming of Christ. If you want to do something new. I'd go with either City or Snow. Deserts I see done a lot. Though Lava is cool, but I find it to specialized.

go for the lava, it looks generally really cool and its pretty easy to make.
Just get some putty stuff (like green stuff or similar), oh yeah if your using green stuff make it wet first, and then press it against a rock.
Let it dry.

It generally turns out really good and then you just have to paint the 'rock mold' you made and stick it on a base.

I have always loved City rubble bases, but because you are not to keen about it. I would go with snow or desert, they are simple enough to be done quickly.

What are you starting ? if you are doing necrons go with the desert

Although I really like the Lava idea ;and if done right looks amazing; why not try a city/snow look like the Vostoyrons (sp?)

I personally love City Rubble/Snow bases. Here's a little run down...

1)Sand flocked base sprayed black.
2)Paint with a dark grey: I use Great Coak from P3, but Necron Abyss from Foundation looks good aswell.
3)Drybrush this with a lighter Grey, I use Fortress Grey for a good contrast.
4)Add patches of Chesnut Ink for small areas of mud/dirt.
5)Once dry, then add the Snow Flock in more patches.

To add another dimension to the City Rubble effect, I also like to cut pieces of sprue to about 5mm square and stick them onto the base before I Sand Flock and Spray it to give the effect of bigger bits of Debris and Rubble.

I'll try and get pics for you later! Hope this helps.

I'm doing some mock ups for my race that I created (http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=55657.0). There's a load of info there (I posted up the full background, all 2846 words of it, on the second page) but you don't need to read it =P

I guess the easy question would be "well, do it like their home world" - but that's a gas giant :-X At the moment I'm thinking of doing desert basing to represent one of the moons, though.
