Default Moving Upwards

I just wanted some clarification about scaling walls/moving upwards.

If I put a unit of shooters on a roof or platform that is 8 inches high, does that mean they are out of range for assaulting, and that an attacking unit would basically be 6 inches up the wall?

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.
Thanks
Will

The rulebook is extremely crpytic on vertical rules. The only thing they let you know is that you can move up as far as you move horizantally. I would probally work out Assaults the same way.

If you can`t reach the enemy unit with your assault move, you don`t move, at all.

I suggest in situations like this to either
A let them scale half of the distance in the movement phase (even if they can`t place the models up there), then charge them
B use different terrain with floors in them, and use the CoD rules for vertical movement.

Ye allowing them to scale would be fair. But if you want it that the attacking unit cant get you because they have no way up, then it sohuld be played that the unit you put up there was no way of gettign down either.

Yeah, regular movement would leave you 6" up the wall, but assault moves are all or nothing deals.

Even worse since this type of terrain typically requires (unpredictable) difficult terrain tests as well.

Problem is, units placed on such lofty perches are usually the kind with big weapons that don`t WANT to move...

Just ask your opponent how they got there in the first place ;D

Can't really imagine anyone making terrain 8" high with no way down, but if they did I guess I'd play it as a shooting platform, unassaultable to infantry.

Another good one is whether they can assault you if they can't be placed on your shelf. That is, I'm 5" up, you roll successfully to get up 5" in your assault phase, but I fill the whole shelf and you can't stand on it. Am I assaultable?

And what about fall-back moves? if the unit is unable to make it's fall-back move without doubling back on it's own trail, it counts as destroyed, does it not?

I personally would have no terrain higher than 6" unless it had multiple levels, or at least some way to get up there.
Ladder, Ramp, Stairs, Elevator, Grav-lift, Grenade-jump :P, etc

As to whether they could be locked in assault: What do you think would happen when the assault troops tossed their grenades on to the shelf?

But if there is super-tall terrain, just send the jump-packs in. They'll jump up, over the troops, and assault them from behind. Problem solved.
