Default Would you let people play with a slightly outdated Codex?

My friend has gone insane over the new Chaos changes. And not in a good way.

He started them due to the bloody insane armory and Chaos books. Now that it seems that most of them are being killed off, and everything really being dumbed down, he is considering quitting the hobby (he's played for about a year, if you want a reference point).

I really don't want to lose a playmate, so I'm considering letting him play with the old Codex among our gaming group, so long as he avoids combos such as Daemon-bombing (which he never found even remotely interesting, so that's not an issue).

This got me started on a train of thought (usually not a good thing!).

Would you let people play from an younger edition of Codex? Obviously, no 1st or 2nd edition, but maybe the 3rd edition when the 4th edition Codex is out.

Obviously again, you wouldn't be able to take the best of both Codices.

Would you let people do this?

Discuss.

Well, officially I believe you can play with the old codex for a month before it is outdated, so at least for a month you've got this bit working for ya' :P

As far as I concern myself though, I believe it is fine as long as the other player has a copy of the new codex anyways and is trying to work out an army list he or she actually likes.

If it was shortly after the new Codex's release, or some other understandable circumstance, yes.

If it was just because they don't want they don't want their powergamer list messed up, tough noodles. :

If your friend is going to quit over a couple changes to a Codex then maybe it's good for him. You need to get used to new Codexes. If it was always the same it'd be booooring. :

For a month, yes. Then no. I would, however, accept house rules for things like Books of Chaos that may be removed. But much of the rebalancing is happening because GW recognizes problems with the current book. I am not okay with people continuing to exploit its flaws after they have been patched by a new release.

Ditto on what everyone else said.

In short, chaos is ungodly complex atm, and the options aren't terribly well balanced. The new codex, while probably not perfect, is going a long way torwards fixing a lot of these issues. I certainly wouldnt consider chaos gimped because of it, and in all honesty, I don't imagine most lists would change drastically as a result of the codex swap(barring stuff like demon bombs that were builts specifically to cheese loopholes).

So what does he run? Anything Iron Warriors-ish?

I agree with Khanaris.

Its not fair for him to use the old codex just because he doesn't like the new one. It has been changed for a reason and he should accept that.

Lord on something fast(Usually a bike) with the demon power siren and a banner. Siren is usually passed and makes a lord untargettable. The lord charges into combat and uses the banner to summon demons, who then assalt into a unit. There's not much you can do against it, besides punch that dude in the face.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?
