Default Ocean battles...

Worlds that are 100% ocean. I know I saw a few oil rig boards in games day. But, like, 100% water with battles between ships. Fantasy has this already. I was wondering, can we use those rules and have ship/ocean battles in 40k? It'd also be nice to play a game set in an underwater dome, and there're cracks in the walls letting water fill the place. That'd be interesting...

You can make house rules however you wish. I once fought in a campaign battle on a water board. All the terrain was various ships that could be moved about like the players and that had an armor value. So they were like giant floating vehicles and all models had to be on one at the end of each turn unless they were a jetbike, skimmer etc.

With Fantasy, models in the water often have to fail an armor save in order to remain in play. It would work much the same way in 40k, except that the sunken Space Marines would probably survive to be picked up later.

Although that wouldn't work for every race. Isn't Eldar armour lightweight yet still very resistant? So something with a 3+ save might not weigh much more than a regular soldier. Just a thought.

That is a good point, actually. And I have a hunch that all Tyranids aside from the largest are going to be pretty good natural swimmers, whereas Necrons would be content to just march across the bottom.

one of my local red-shirts loves ocean 40k.

heres the rules:
-boats move 2d6 inches
-Tyranids and necrons do not need boats ( nids adapt, and necrons don't need to breathe)
-when a boat is destoyed, place all models on the board where the boat was. make a dangerous terrain test (only once)
-models swim by making a leadership test. if they pass, they move as if in difficult terrain. crons and nids can walk walk right on the water as if in difficult terrain with no LD test
-skimmers may fly above water
-units can only disembark on shore, and do so just as a vehicle, and may not re-embark.
-boats have no guns, and have 12 front/side armor and 10 rear
